Gold Logie winner Samuel Johnson has revealed the heartbreaking inspiration behind his new book, Dear Mum.
Appears on Wednesdays The morning showthe 43-year-old ex-actor described the inspiration behind his book, which contains a collection of letters from Australian celebrities to their own mothers.
‘It’s a celebration of mothers. As a co-founder of [cancer charity] Love Your Sister, I represent about seven hundred thousands of moms in the breast cancer space, ”he told hosts Kylie Gillies and Larry Emdur.

‘I wanted to put together a fitting tribute’: Samuel Johnson, 43, appeared on The Morning Show Wednesday to discuss the inspiration behind his new book, Dear Mum.
‘I am very passionate about representing our mothers and I wanted to put together an appropriate tribute, a tribute, a celebration for all mothers,’ explains Samuel, who has grown his hair since he retired from acting a few years ago.
“So I asked more than 90 Australian notables to contribute letters to their mothers for publication so that I could use the proceeds to fund cancer research.”
Samuel, who lost his own mother when he was a toddler, warned that Dear Mum is not filled with “ fluffy Hallmark ” tributes, but rather explores the complex relationships many people share with their mothers.

‘Some people have decided to purify the air with their mothers, some are very refreshing and honest. They are not all fairytale, ”he said.
The famous authors in Dear Mum include Patti Newton, Guy Pearce, Amanda Keller, Rebecca Gibney, Peter Helliar, Shane Jacobson, and even Larry Emdur from The Morning Show.
It also includes a poem that his late mother wrote to Samuel, who tragically ended her life when he was only three years old.

The poem reads: “All the seas of joy / Get up to sing to you boy / Surge and swell and roar / All the seas of joy / Sound wonderfully close / Since you’ve been here.”
Looking back at the poem in a Facebook post earlier this month, Samuel wrote: ‘There is only one picture of me and my mom, and that’s always okay because I burned that poem in my heart. ‘
Samuel went on to describe how his mother’s death affected his late sister Connie, who died of breast cancer in 2017.

The actor revealed that Connie’s death, and the tragic impact it had on her two young sons, “ had a lot to do ” with why he put together Dear Mum.
