Samsung wasted no time giving users the first official glimpse of its next foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Flip, during a major product event on Tuesday.
Although many details about the Z Flip had been leaked before the event, Samsung had a few surprises for users tuned to the “Unpacked” event, including a new and improved hinge that should help reduce previous problems with the previous folding devices as well as details about prices and official release date.
According to Samsung, the phone will be released on February 14 for a formidable $ 1,380 – a few hundred dollars more than Apple’s most expensive iPhone 11 Pro model.
The Z Flip, the first ever commercially available folding phone with a horizontal fold in the middle of the device, allowing it to bend like a retro clam shell phone, is equipped with Samsung’s foldable glass and come with one and a 6.7-inch display.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip (photo) was the first product to be announced at the Samsung product event on Tuesday and comes with various new tricks, including the ability to fold and stay at 90 degrees for a hands-free experience
Thanks to the form factor with which the telephone can bend over itself horizontally, customers can use the device in a number of unique ways.
In combination with a perforator-like camera embedded in the Z Flips front-facing display, users can bend the device at a 90-degree angle to make videos, photos and also video chat hands-free by placing and pointing the device whatever they want to record.
A new hinge that the company calls the “Hideaway Hinge”. Samsung says the new hinge is reinforced by fibers that wrap around the actual hinge mechanism to prevent dirt and other particles that can damage the display and interfere with the folding mechanism.

The previous Samsung folding device, the Galaxy Fold, was plagued by problems with the display and the hinge that cause critical malfunctions in the screen.
In addition to reinforcing the Z Flips hinge, the South Korean leather giant has also made clear improvements to the user interface of the foldable set-up.
One of the innovations is what the company calls Multi-Active Window, which helps users multitask by dragging the apps you want to use to different ends of the screen.
According to the feature, which splits the screen horizontally, users can “browse through an article about the latest fashion in the upper half while shopping for your favorite pieces at the bottom”
In the case of specific apps such as YouTube, Samsung says that this ability to split the screen in two would be dynamic and allow onewatch and navigate on YouTube – stream at the top while searching for other videos, reading descriptions and writing below. “
When the devices are closed and folded over themselves, a front display shows texts and reminders of the user and they can check the date and time.
“At Samsung, we were encouraged by the excitement for the Galaxy Fold. Galaxy Z Flip is an important next step in our development of the foldable category by offering consumers a new form factor, a new display and above all a new kind of mobile experience, “Dr. TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics in a statement.
The Z Flip comes in various colors, including Mirror Purple, Mirror Black and in some countries Mirror Gold.
It will be available in stores and online through AT&T, Best Buy, Sprint, Samsung Experience Stores and Samsung’s own website.
For the more sophisticated among us, Samsung will also release a more expensive, designer addition to the Z Flip, made with the help of American fashion designer Thom Browne.
Although the company did not specify a specific price for the designer iteration of its Z Flip, earlier leaks suggest that the device could cost as much as $ 2,500 – more than $ 1,000 more than the regular version.
