Telephones with folding screens are more than just a whim.

In an annual developer conference on Monday, Samsung teased what appears to be an immediate successor to its innovative new Galaxy Fold – a nearly $ 2,000 phone with a bendable display.

As reported by The edge, Samsung's research and development team foreshadowed the nameless device on stage Monday, teasing what looks like a phone that bends vertically like a clam shell as opposed to horizontally like a book.

& # 39; This brand new form factor that we are exploring now not only fits easily in your pocket, but also changes the way you use your phone & # 39 ;, said Hyesoon Jeong, head of Samsung & # 39; s framework R&D group at the conference according to The Verge.

Allegedly, Samsung stopped mentioning details about the intriguing new concept, making its name, specifications and development phase a mystery.

It is equally mysterious whether the company even has advanced folding technology to an advanced level to make the design a success.

Samsung's only other foldable device, the Galaxy Fold, has encountered countless problems since it was introduced earlier this year.

In particular, the phone encountered various problems with the display, making the screen distorted or, in some cases, completely useless.

Since then, however, Samsung seems to have successfully corrected the price of the Fold, allowing the device to be released to the consumer last month – whether a new design will take away the problems of the phone would have to be revealed over time.

Whether the new Samsung phone will ever come on the market is perhaps an open question, but the great interest in building phones with folding screens has crystallized in the past year.

In addition to companies such as Huawei – the only other phone manufacturer that has released a foldable phone – are relative newcomers to the world of high-end smartphones such as TCL who have also started to make their claim.

A recent prototype sent by the company shows a multi-hinge device that bends to form a & # 39; Z & # 39; shape and extend to a 10-inch screen when fully opened.

When folded, the phone folds itself together to configure the device in a book-like form with one slimmer, outward facing screen.

The company is said to have been busy developing various other folding devices, including a portable bending type.
