Samsung promises to improve the acclaimed camera of the Galaxy S20

Samsung has said that it is working on a software update for its new Galaxy S20 Ultra smartphone to solve problems with its powerful zoom camera.

Prior to the release of the phone next week, the device’s auto-focus feature has been criticized for being unreliable and taking a subject too long – or not at all.

The camera also shows “aggressive image processing” that, according to “excessively smoothing of the skin” results in the edge, which causes an unrealistic, digitized tint.

In response, the company said it is working on a software update for the luxury smartphone, which will be released on March 6 with a starting price of £ 1,199.

“The Galaxy S20 has a groundbreaking, advanced camera system,” Samsung said in a statement to MailOnline.

“We are constantly working on optimizing performance to deliver the best experience for consumers.

“As part of this ongoing effort, we are working on a future update to improve the camera experience.”

The company must still recognize a specific problem with the camera or a cause, or when the updates come.

Pre-release reviews of the S20 Ultra have highlighted bugs on the camera – including the focus that sometimes does not focus on a subject at all – as well as a shallow depth of field, which means a blurred area around the image subject.

“I encountered a number of disruptive software errors while trying the camera,” said PC Magis Sascha Segan.

‘Focus pulses are the most annoying – sometimes the focus just doesn’t want to lock, or is only locked after you have clearly tried a few different focal lengths for a second or two.

“That could be enough to lose a shot.”

In the meantime, the Verge’s review called the aggressive image processing and clarifying the phone “ham-fisted.”

“The S20 Ultra brings shadows to faces and sometimes to the entire scene, it tries to adjust the white balance differently and it smoothes the skin,” wrote reviewer Dieter Bohn.

“Samsung’s algorithms try way too hard.”

Another comparison of the video review of the Galaxy S20 Ultra with Apple’s iPhone 11 Pro Max shows that it focuses on a nearby object with much better brightness.

The camera function of the Galaxy S20 Ultra has been much praised by Samsung, who said it “opens the door to completely new experiences that were never possible on a smartphone.”

The S20 Ultra is one of three models in the new Galaxy S20 series that will be released in a week, along with the standard £ 799 S20 and the £ 999 S20 Plus.

The high-end camera options of the S20 Ultra are the biggest selling point, including no less than 108MP wide lens, a 12MP ultra-wide lens and a 48MP telephoto lens and a DepthVision sensor.

In addition to camera problems, privacy issues have also been raised about the telephoto zoom lens of the Ultra that allows users to zoom in up to 100 times while maintaining a high resolution.

A reviewer called the camera zoom on the S20 Ultra “so good that it is actually invasive,” while another expert warned how such technology could be used for “nefarious purposes,” such as looking at people’s bedrooms.

“I would suggest that this is marketed as a new feature to sell more products, although it may be a gimmick because I doubt the average user needs this magnification level,” security expert Jake Moore told MailOnline.

Samsung unveiled its three S20 models at its Unpacked event in San Francisco on 11 February, along with its first smartphone with its first glass screen – the Galaxy Flip.

However, one YouTube reviewer has questioned the truth of Samsung’s glass screen claims because of the susceptibility to scratching by just a fingernail.

“Samsung calls this glass, but this screen clearly does not have the scratch resistance or structural benefits that customers expect from glass,” Jerry Rig Everything said in his video review.
