- Sam Kerr has been injured since January 2023, after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament
- After undergoing surgery, he is yet to return to action for Chelsea.
Sam Kerr surprised Chelsea fans after she was pictured back training on Sunday afternoon, having traveled with Sonia Bompastor’s squad to a warm-weather training camp in Portugal.
The Matildas star ruptured his ACL in January last year and underwent knee surgery for the problem while back in England.
Kerr, 31, who missed the remainder of the WSL season, is not expected to return to action until February or March, but was photographed performing various drills while shooting on goal.
However, it is understood the Australian forward is not yet training with the rest of the Chelsea squad, with American star Mia Fishel also recovering from a torn ACL.
Kerr was also photographed enjoying a trip to the beach with her teammates during training camp.
The Chelsea star has also gone through a particularly difficult few weeks after finding out that his grandmother had been hit by a car. The incident occurred after Coral, 89, got off a bus near her home in Perth.

Kerr flew to Portugal to join the rest of her teammates, after spending the holidays in Australia
Kerr enjoyed a trip to the beach with his teammates and appeared to move well as he ran up and down the field with the ball during training.
The driver had driven his vehicle onto the sidewalk while trying to overtake a bus.
His grandmother Coral, 89, was taken to Royal Perth Hospital after suffering multiple limb fractures and a concussion.
Kerr and his father, Roger, were in New South Wales celebrating the marriage of his Matildas teammate Emily Van Egmond when they learned that Kerr’s grandmother had been involved in the incident.
Van Egmond had married his long-term partner, Kat Thompson, at a vineyard in New South Wales.
Kerr and his father subsequently flew back to Perth to be with his grandmother.
Kerr had attended the wedding with his partner and West Ham star Kristie Mewis, who recently announced she was having a baby.
The couple, who got engaged last year, have been dating since around 2020, and Kerr flew back home this week.
While the Chelsea forward is reluctant to return to training until she is fully fit, her recent progress will no doubt please Matildas coach Tom Sermanni.
Kerr, 31, took to Instagram to post a story featuring his fiancée Kristie Mewis and the couple’s cat (pictured) at their home.
The Australian national team coach had revealed his concern that Kerr could be out longer than expected after suffering a setback in training.
Australia will be next in action at the SheBelieves Cup at the end of February.
They will face Japan, the United States and Colombia in the group stage, but that tournament may come too soon for Kerr, with the first group stage match taking place on February 21.
Meanwhile, Chelsea lead the Women’s Super League having won nine of their league games this season.
