Salt Lake City has been announced as the host city for the 2034 Winter Olympics.

The decision was confirmed on Wednesday in Paris at a meeting of the International Olympic Committee just days before the start of this summer’s games.

Salt Lake City was the only contender because climate change and high operating costs have reduced the number of cities willing and able to host the Winter Games.

Utah has taken advantage of the lack of interest from other regions by presenting itself to Olympic officials as an enthusiastic host that will repeat its mandate after having also hosted the games in 2002.

Remnants of the 2002 Games are scattered throughout the city and have kept Olympic fever alive for more than two decades.

Organizers of the 2034 Games touted that enduring enthusiasm throughout the selection process, showing visiting Olympic officials how they have preserved venues used in 2002.

More to follow.
