Salma’s appearance at TIFF came amid a historic dual strike in Hollywood, with the Writer’s Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA unions involved in protests against the studios.
Salma, who does not appear in the film but is a producer, wore a SAG-AFTRA shirt to the film festival, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
She informed the outlet that she had received permission from the union to appear at TIFF for the film.
The Christmas movie follows a Mexican family celebrating the holiday in the country’s capital.
“Misunderstandings within families are linked to generational differences,” she told THR.
“It’s not just a Spanish-language film, but a Mexican film. So we’re very grateful that we were able to bring it to Toronto and that the union supported it, otherwise I wouldn’t have come without permission.
The film contains three storylines, and one of them involves the return of the family’s estranged daughter in hopes of repairing her relationship with her loved ones.
Speaking about the plot, she recently said Variety: ‘Sometimes, when it’s a family member, you have to first accept, then understand. But it is important to take this second step, not to tolerate a loved one, but to love someone completely.
The film’s screenwriter, José Tamez, added: “I was trying to present three love stories.
