A heartbroken woman has recalled the last conversation she had with her ex-partner seconds before he was hit by a freight train.

The father of five had been speaking on the phone to his ex-partner Kellie Trinidad at the time of the accident and was heading to her house to drop off painkillers.

Trinidad said the phone suddenly went dead during their last conversation.

‘He said I’m 15 minutes away in Salisbury, I’ll be home soon, then the phone went off. A couple seconds later, I could hear the freight train horn,” she said. 7News.

“I tried to call him back, but the phone didn’t answer and I kept checking the message bank.”

Two hours later, police officers knocked on her door and informed her that Mr. Garven had died.

Trinidad wants her ex-partner, from whom she separated in 2017, to be remembered as a “kind and loving father” to her five children.

He had been homeless since the separation.

Mrs. Trinidad has started a GoFundMe campaign to help pay Mr Garven’s funeral costs, explaining that times are tough during the cost of living crisis.

So far he has received $790 of his $5,000 goal.

The Department of Infrastructure and Transport said the crossing infrastructure was operational on the day of the incident.

“We always remind pedestrians to observe safety precautions at all times around railway lines and to ensure they cross tracks at designated crossing areas,” a department spokesperson told 7News.
