Ruud van Nistelrooy insists he is preparing to return to his assistant manager role at Manchester United after a spell as caretaker manager.
Van Nistelrooy has stepped in to take charge of the team following the sacking of Erik ten Hag, with Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim expected to be the permanent appointment.
Amorim will bring his own staff to Old Trafford, putting Van Nistelrooy’s long-term future at Old Trafford in doubt. But the Dutchman insists that his plan is to stay once his interim position ends, and stressed that he still has two years left on his contract.
“It will be a short interim job; that was communicated very clearly and I’m happy with that,” he said. “I decided to come back here for a very important reason: I am here as an assistant, I came here to help the club forward and I am still very motivated to do so in any capacity, as an assistant and now as an interim. After this I return to my assistant contract I have here for this season and next. I am very motivated to stay here and help the club move forward.
“We’ll see, but it’s the contractual situation I find myself in and my desire to help the club move forward. “I can tell you about my side of the story and after the new manager signs and talks take place, we have to see how things develop.

Amorim to bring his own staff to Old Trafford when his appointment is confirmed
Van Nistelrooy was Erik ten Hag’s number 2 and said he is eager to return to the role.
‘I want to help, I want to do everything I can according to my abilities. The club is in a difficult situation and is not where we all want it to be. “Everyone watches Manchester United, but it is us, as people on the ground, who must do the most, with the support of the fans, and it is a process.”
Asked if he was speaking to Amorim about his interim boss, Van Nistelrooy replied dryly: “Has it been announced yet?” So we don’t know. Once again, we’ll see what the future holds.’
