Three sisters who claim they killed their father in self-defense for sexually assaulting them have been recognized as victims in a new Russian trial.

But legal experts say the surprising step two won’t save the girls from jail time in a high-profile case.

The sisters – all teenagers at the time – allege they were raped and violated by their father Mikhail Khachaturyan, 57, who was stabbed to death with his own hunting knife while sleeping in his Moscow flat in 2018.

A campaign is underway to drop the murder charges against the two older siblings, Krestina and Angelina Khachaturyan, who were 19 and 18 when their father was murdered.

A judge in Russia has three sisters – Krestina (left), Angelina (right) and Maria Khachaturyan – who murdered ‘their father of sexually assaulted self-defense’ in 2018 as ‘victims’.

The sisters, including youngest sibling Maria (right), allege they were raped and violated by their father Mikhail Khachaturyan (left), 57, who was stabbed to death with his own hunting knife while sleeping in his Moscow flat in 2018.

A new posthumous trial, in which the powerful Russian Commission of Inquiry recognized the sisters as ‘victims’, will take place against the allegations of abuse against Khachaturyan.

Angelina Khachaturyan’s lawyer, Maria Davtyan, welcomed the move.

She said, “They are in fact victims because of the actions committed against them.”

The long-term abuse they faced, Davtyan added, was “ the reason the girls were forced to do what they did. ”

But analysts warn that if their late father is posthumously cleared of abuse, it would be against them in the murder trial that will follow.

However, if the father is sentenced posthumously, the two older sisters could still face jail time.

This is because the couple According to legal expert Valentin Klyucharyov, they are unlikely to act in ‘self-defense’ in murdering their father under Russian law.

He said, “If the girls are telling the truth, it is horrible from a moral point of view what happened to them.”

“But this cannot be described as self-defense.”

This is because the father did not torture or sexually assault them the moment they stabbed him with his hunting knife, he explained.

“Maybe he deserved death, but the court will judge the girls according to the laws of the Russian Federation.”

This new investigation will continue before legal proceedings resume in allegations of murder against Krestina and Angelina.

Their younger sister Maria, who was 17 when her father died, also admitted to killing him after enduring “ years of abuse. ”

However, Maria is treated separately by the justice system after she was found temporarily insane at the time her father was murdered.

When convicted, she waits in a psychiatric hospital instead of a prison.

The case has been seen in Russia as a litmus test of how the law deals with domestic sexual abuse.

Nearly a million Russians have signed petitions calling for the sisters’ release.

The investigation previously found that they were dealing with “ physical and mental suffering … over a long period of time. ”

Evidence showed that the father threatened one of his’ terrified ‘daughters:’ You take your mother’s place.

“I will marry you and you will give birth to my baby.”

An expert’s report said, ‘He ordered them to undress before his eyes and said he wanted to’ check ‘them.

She then ordered him to masturbate and said he had problems with his prostate and that it would be a cure.

He “abused and humiliated” them “with various weapons.”

Angelina had blood running from her face after an attack by her father, who was reported to have ties to both high-ranking Russian officials and underworld kings.

But the sisters’ aunt, Naira Khachaturyan, claimed the earlier official investigation found no evidence of sexual assaults against the teens.

Medical tests showed that two of the three were virgins, she claimed, while the third had a secret boyfriend.

She said, “They knew they could live the way they wanted once they got rid of their father.”

They wanted to ‘remove him from their lives’ and enjoy a ‘dissolute lifestyle’.
