A British backpacker was found dead in a hostel in Colombia, after his girlfriend flew from the UK to join him and headed to his room for an emotional reunion.

The 36-year-old man’s body was found in a bed at the Black Sheep shelter in Medellin, the capital of Antioquia province.

The man’s girlfriend discovered the body after checking in at the front desk and heading to the room.

Shortly after noon Monday, a shelter worker alerted police.

It is understood the man was last seen at 10pm local time on Sunday.

Further tests are being carried out to discover the cause of death, but there is nothing at this time to indicate it is related to the crime.

The local press states that 20 non-immigrant foreigners have been found dead this year in different circumstances in the Aburrá Valley, a natural basin of the Medellín River and one of the most populated valleys in the country in its Andean region.

All but one died in Medellín. Thirteen were Americans and another British. Only one of the deaths is being treated as a homicide.

The Black Sheep Hostel is a traveler’s favorite in Medellín.

It describes itself online as an establishment run by New Zealanders and Colombians in a quiet area of ​​Medellín called Patio Bonito in El Poblado, close to two major shopping centers and an area with hundreds of bars and restaurants.
