Russia-Ukraine War: List of Key Events, Day 289

We take a look at some of the major developments as the war between Russia & Ukraine enters its 289th year.

This is the current state of affairs Friday 9th December.


  • Brittney Griner, an American basketball player, has been released from Russia and is now on her way to the United States. She was released after a prisoner swap agreement with Viktor Bout, a convicted arms dealer.
  • The Kremlin stated that the prisoner exchange between Russia, the US and Russia was not a step towards improving relations between Washington & Moscow, which remain “serious”.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the West’s desire for dominance in international affairs increases the risk to potential conflict.
  • Putin stated that the goal for the war in Ukraine is an expansion of Russia’s frontiers, contrary to his comments at the start the “special Military Operation” when he said that Russian plans do not include the occupation or control of Ukrainian land.
  • According to Wall Street Journal, new sanctions are likely to be imposed on Russia due to Moscow’s deployment in Iran drones in Ukraine.

To fight

  • According to Ukrainian officials, Russian troops attacked the entire front line of eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk area as part of Russia’s reduced ambition to seize the most land it claims.
  • According to the Ukrainian General Staff’s statement, its forces attacked Russian positions and troop staging sites in at least half a dozen villages in southern Ukraine.
  • Some of the villagers who were captured by Ukraine in the southern region Kherson have returned to their homes, which were damaged or reduced to rubble after the Russian shells struck.

Military aid

  • The U.S. House of Representatives passed a defense bill which would provide Ukraine with $800 million more security aid next year.
  • According to Reuters news agency and sources familiar with the matter, the US was also planning to send Ukraine a $275million military aid package that included new capabilities to defeat drones as well as bolster air defenses.
