The spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, has assured that Moscow does not seek confrontation with the United States and, despite the recent incident between an American drone and a Russian fighter in the waters of the Black Sea, has advocated leaving open the lines of communication with Washington.
“We think it’s important to leave the lines of communication open, in fact, we do. We do not seek confrontation, we defend pragmatic cooperation in the interests of the peoples of our countries, but at the same time, we know how to protect those interests,” Zakharova said, TASS reports.
Tensions between Moscow and Washington have flared again after the United States confirmed on Monday that one of its drones had crashed into the Black Sea after colliding with a Russian SU-27 fighter while operating in international airspace. Russia, for its part, defended not having come into contact with the drone and pointed out that it plunged after a series of strange maneuvers.
After this incident, the authorities of both countries have escalated their usual crossroads of suspicion, which is why even from Moscow it was recognized that relations with Washington were at “their lowest point” and in a “deplorable state.”
