Russia has amassed more than half a million troops on the front lines in a dramatic attempt to overpower Ukrainian forces, analysts say.

Dr Jack Watling, of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), said: “Russian forces have now expanded to 510,000 troops.

‘The outlook for Ukraine is bleak. Your allies must replenish their reserves.

The warning came as Russia continued its advances in northern Ukraine, threatening the country’s second city, Kharkiv.

It may also have prompted a visit by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to kyiv yesterday to assure President Volodymyr Zelensky that US military aid was “on the way”.

Blinken said: “We know this is a difficult time.

“But American aid is going to make a real difference in the face of ongoing Russian aggression on the battlefield.”

Congress recently approved a $60 billion package after months of wrangling involving Republican lawmakers.
