A man has been charged with murder after a woman’s body was found at a home in Sydney’s inner west.
NSW Police were called to a home on Clements St in Russell Lea, where officers arrived to find the deceased woman, believed to be in her 50s.
She has not yet been formally identified.
Police allege the woman was stabbed to death by her housemate and suffered horrific injuries including a slashed throat.
Benjamin Art, 42, who police confirmed was known to the woman, was arrested at the scene and taken to Burwood police station.
A statement from New South Wales Police said it was assisting with investigations.
Superintendent Christine McDonald told media on Thursday afternoon that police alleged the woman suffered fatal stab wounds and it was “very clear this is a homicide.”

Superintendent McDonald said the victim and the 42-year-old man lived together in a shared house and the alleged murder would be classified as domestic violence homicide.
“The scene that the police arrived at… the police arrived at that scene, it’s very clear that it’s a homicide,” he said.
‘The victim suffered significant and multiple injuries to his upper body. In relation to the weapon, we are talking about stab wounds, so it is a sharp instrument.’
Police allege the woman was stabbed to death by her housemate and suffered horrific injuries, including a cut throat.
He added that the victim and the person of interest, who is now assisting police with their investigations, did not have an intimate relationship with each other.
Superintendent McDonald said five people lived in the home and the person of interest moved into the home about three weeks ago.
A member of the public dialed triple 0 after hearing a woman “screaming” in the direction.
The call was made at 11.07am and police arrived at the scene at 11.08am, Superintendent McDonald said.
The caller is giving a statement to the police.

Police have established a crime scene and detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
Five people lived in the property and the 42-year-old man is “known to the other occupants” of the house.
Superintendent McDonald said the man had no outstanding bail matters or warrants in New South Wales.
“What I believe to be true is that they were not in an intimate relationship, the fact that they were living together, residing under the same roof, even for two or three weeks, makes it an incident of domestic violence,” Superintendent McDonald said.
Police have established a crime scene and detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
