He won Oscar Gold for Best Actor in 2001 thanks to his acclaimed performance in Gladiator.
But Russell Crowe has admitted that an overwhelming sense of guilt prevented him from fully putting his moment in the spotlight.
The 56-year-old spoke to Richard Wilkins today on Tuesday, claiming he never deserved the praise he received for the role, as it was Gladiator director Ridley Scott who really made the film a success.

‘[After starring in Gladiator]”I have so many pats on my back, and, you know, I got some big prizes and stuff, and that has of course taken me to another level for quite some time,” Russell explained.
However, the actor said he felt guilt when he recently watched a live screening of Gladiator at the Colosseum in Rome.
“I watched that movie and it’s a director’s movie,” he said, adding, “It was one of those moments of,” Why did I get all the attention when Ridley Scott’s Academy Award was? ”

It is after Russell admitted to The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon that he nearly turned down his career as a role in Gladiator.
The Kiwi-born star, who appeared on the show via a video link last week, described making Gladiator 20 years ago as’ a unique experience ‘, in part because, according to the actor,’ the [initial] script they had was so bad. ‘
“It was just that bad,” Russell continued. “It was like, okay, ummm. Yes, ”he mused.

Despite his hesitations, Russell eventually agreed to take on the role after an initial meeting with director Ridley.
The film won Academy Awards not only for Russell, but also for Best Picture, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects and Best Costume Design.
In his latest film Unhinged, Russell plays a man with extreme road rage chasing a woman for peeping him on the highway.
