Russell Crowe returns to the horror genre in the disturbing first trailer for the upcoming film The Exorcism.
The trailer featuring the Gladiator star, who previously played the Vatican’s chief exorcist in the 2023 horror film The Pope’s Exorcist, was released on Thursday.
In it, the 60-year-old Oscar winner once again wears the clerical collar, this time as actor Anthony Miller, who begins to break down while playing a priest on a cursed film set.
When his estranged daughter Lee Miller (Ryan Simpkins) begins to suspect that her father’s problems go beyond a relapse of old addiction problems, she tries to get help from a real priest.
The film, directed by Joshua John Miller, also stars Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg and David Hyde Pierce.

The trailer begins with Crowe during confession, when he says, “Forgive me, father, for I have sinned.” It is a work that comes to me as a result of someone else’s tragedy.
The scene cuts to Crowe flipping through the script for the movie he’s making, which has scribbles and drawings all over it, and one of them says, ‘God is dead!!’ Satan lives.’
Another page says, “You know you will not be saved.”
The clip continues showing Crowe and his daughter Lee on screen as they arrive on set.
There, they meet Blake Holloway (Chloe), who plays a possessed girl in the movie they are filming and is being cleansed through a burning sage ritual.
‘So what about the wise man?’ Lee asks Blake.
‘Have you forgotten what kind of movie we’re making?’ Blake replies.
“All kinds of messy things happened when they were making movies like The Omen or The Exorcist. And the guy your father replaced,” he says, as the clip shows a man falling to his death from him, as a voice says, “Everything is cursed.”

We then see the priest appear on set with Lee to monitor Crowe on set, but are horrified in one scene when he suddenly bends his body completely backwards.
In a later scene, Crowe confronts Lee and tells him, “He’s not worth saving, and you know it!”
He continues to get worse until he appears completely possessed at the end of the trailer and attacks Lee, picking her up by the neck.
The audience is then shown Crowe on set filming a scene in which he plays his Exorcist.

Miller revealed that the idea for the film began in his childhood, when he watched his father, Jason Miller, play Father Karras as he threw himself out of a window in The Exorcist.
The film will be released in theaters on June 7.
“If that wasn’t disturbing enough on its own, my father never shied away from telling me stories of how “cursed” the film was: the mysterious fires that plagued the production, the strange deaths, the lifelong injuries… the list went on. . incessantly. The story of any “cursed movie” has captivated me ever since,” he shared, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“With The Exorcism, we wanted to update the possession movie formula (“A heroic man rescues a woman from forces she is too weak and simple to fight against herself!”) for a world where no group possesses goodness. and decency over another,” he added.
“We were gifted with an extraordinary cast and creative team to tell a story about how we are all vulnerable to darkness, to perpetuating it, if we fail to confront our demons.”
The film will be released in theaters on June 7.
Crowe is no stranger to the horror genre, having recently played Father Gabriele Amorth in The Pope’s Exorcist. A sequel was confirmed in April 2023.
