Russell Crowe to direct star-studded thriller Poker Face – which will be filming in Sydney under strict COVID safe guidelines
Russell Crowe has been promoted to director of the upcoming psychological thriller Poker Face.
He was previously just an actor on the project, but will now take over the director role, according to Gary Fleder Variety.
The change is believed to be due to Australia’s coronavirus restrictions, which would make it difficult for American Fleder to arrive Down Under.

Poker Face will now film on location at Fox Studios in Sydney under strict Covid-safe guidelines.
Crowe, who is close friends with Chris Hemsworth, has kept his casting choices close to home by adding Chris’ wife Elsa Pataky and his younger brother Liam Hemsworth to the film’s cast.

Crowe has already picked several iconic locations for the film’s set pieces, according to the Daily Telegram.
At the time, the publication reported that one of the film’s sequences will feature a high-speed chase into the Harbor Tunnel.
The film also showcases the $140 million penthouse atop James Packer’s Crown Residences and “a sprawling Point Piper mansion overlooking Sydney Harbour.”

The rest of the film will likely be shot at Moore Park’s Fox Studios.
Although the film was originally set in Miami, Florida, Crowe has reportedly demanded that the film be shot and set in Sydney.
The New Zealand-born star wants to “show people just how stunning and world-class Sydney is,” according to the newspaper’s sources.

According to Deadline, Poker Face tells the story of a tech billionaire named Jake (played by Russell) who brings his childhood friends to his estate for what turns into a high-stakes poker game.
“Those friends have a love-hate relationship with the host, a master player/planner, and he has devised an elaborate plan to bring some justice to all of them,” reports Deadline.
“However, Jake must rethink his strategy when his mansion is overtaken by a dangerous invader whose previous jobs have all ended in murder and arson.”

In addition to Crowe, the cast will be Wu-Tang Clan frontman RZA, while co-Oscar winner Natalie Portman will be “revolving around a role.”
Russell recently worked with Portman while filming a small part in her movie Thor: Love and Thunder.
Poker Face marks Crowe’s first time behind the camera since his directorial debut The Water Diviner in 2014.
