  • Russ Alan Portelli was given a suspended sentence of 18 months in Perth court
  • Portelli had made an appointment with a 14-year-old boy on Grindr last October
  • But the teenage boy was actually two vigilantes who created a fake profile

A man who admitted to meeting a 14-year-old boy through gay hookup app Grindr has escaped jail time.

Russ Alan Portelli faced Perth court on Thursday after his arrest in October after two vigilantes created a fake profile posing as the teenager before later meeting him at a Kelmscott park. Nine news reported.

The court heard that the vigilantes, who used the name ‘4teen’, had asked Grindr: ‘You don’t mind I’m 14’, to which Portelli, under the name ‘Daddy 13’, replied: ‘I’m kool (sic). I like young ‘.

Portelli had also asked ‘do you want to play now’ and said ‘show what you got baby (sic)’, the court heard.

The 61-year-old was confronted in the park by vigilantes, who warned the police.

Portelli was accused of using electronic communications with the intention of inducing a person under the age of 16 to engage in sexual activity.

He admitted in court that he was trying to meet a 14-year-old. The court heard that Portelli was a victim of child sexual abuse, suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and is cognitively impaired.

The judge ruled that Portelli’s insult was ‘out of character’ and most likely a ‘one-off’, adding that he would receive better help in the community where his risk of recidivism can be managed.

Portelli was sentenced to 18 months in prison, subject to supervisory orders, and he underwent treatment.
