A royal flag raised over King Frederick and Queen Mary’s mansion in Amalienborg has reignited rumors of an “unhappy family life” or drama at home, royal watchers say.
The King and Queen of Denmark were supposed to be on a family holiday with their four children over the Easter holidays, but the flag suggests someone was left behind.
The royal flag only flies when the King, Queen or Crown Prince is home, leading royal watchers to suspect that the family vacation did not go as planned.
Many assumed that Prince Christian had been left behind, perhaps by choice.
“Every family experiences that when children reach a certain age, they don’t always want to be with their parents,” wrote one local.
A royal flag raised over King Frederick and Queen Mary’s mansion in Amalienborg has reignited rumors of an unhappy family life.
“Maybe it was an idea to read the rules that our King and Crown Prince are allowed to travel on the same plane they were never allowed on for security reasons,” said another.
Others joked that the king simply went on vacation without his wife.
These jokes refer to rumors that he had an affair with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova after the couple were photographed on a night out in Madrid in October.
“The King was probably traveling to Spain, his new favorite vacation destination,” one man laughed.
The flag indicates when there is a working royal at home, meaning the King, Queen or Crown Prince was inside during the Christmas season.
Another agreed and joked that they would meet him in Madrid before getting very serious: “Honesty creates trust, while secrets create gossip and distrust.” What has been done can never be undone, no matter how much one tries and how much others try.’
Others defended their King.
‘It is not to be taken for granted that the King was supposed to travel there before the rest of the family was “happy to come.” Unless you know the King personally and he has told you so, there is no need to spread bad rumors about him. This is true whether you like the man or not,’ one growled.
This speculation comes after the palace confirmed that the popular royal couple and their four children would be holidaying abroad and that Queen Margaret would once again be in charge.
The palace has not yet commented on the flag.
The popular couple has worked hard to ignore the affair rumors, which subsided once Frederik was named King.
Queen Margaret’s regent flag was also flying, causing many to speculate that it was Queen Mary or her son Prince Christian who was at home, as there would be no need for the regent to take over if the king Federico was present.
Rumors of a fractured family life died down once King Frederick and Queen Mary received the throne, but had dominated the news cycle after the then-prince. She was spotted on a night out with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova in October.
Photos of the couple enjoying a night out in Madrid angered Mary’s fans, many of whom claimed she “deserved so much more” from her Prince.
They also trashed the veneer of the couple’s “fairytale” romance that began in Sydney, where the Australian-born queen met the then-Prince in a bar.
But royal watchers claim the couple’s relationship has never regained its warmth.
The palace declined to comment, while Genevieve herself denied the rumours, although royal watchers claim that the now King and Queen have remained “distant” since then.
The family’s plans for the Easter holidays came as no surprise to fans.
King Frederick has often stated that taking holidays is an important part of his job as a royal.
He added that as King and Queen, he and Mary will be even busier than usual, making regular breaks even more important.
