Rugged Ex-Oiler Doesn't Make New Team

EDMONTON – These days there is a buffet of exemptions.

The Edmonton Oilers, like any other team, send prospects to play elsewhere if they are deemed unfit for the NHL. Part of this includes releasing players from PTOs.

The last player the Oilers released from PTO was Mike Hoffman, with Travis Dermott still looking for a spot on the team’s blue line. Another player familiar to Oilers fans isn’t so lucky.

Alex Chiasson was invited to Detroit Red Wings training camp with a PTO. The veteran winger hasn’t played in a year, and last played for the aforementioned Red Wings in the 2022-23 season.

Earlier today, the Red Wings announced they released Chiasson from his PTO. Unfortunately, the 34-year-old winger must find a new team to continue his playing career.

Chiasson played in three preseason games. He failed to score a single point while playing 13:09 per night.

During his last stint in the NHL, he played 20 games for the Red Wings and scored nine points, six of which were goals. Chiasson has always been a good option in front of the net on the power play, and he showed it by winning 2:39 per game with the man advantage.

Chiasson was always a goalscorer. Of his 234 career points, 120 were goals. The most he had in a season came in 2018-19 when he scored 22 goals in his first year with the Oilers.

It’s rare for someone to get PTO with another club this late in the preseason, especially after being released from another team. If Chiasson wants to continue his playing career, he may need to play across the pond in a European league.
