Rubén Amorim has been warned that his players could react negatively if he calls them “perhaps the worst team in the club’s history.”

The Manchester United manager made the shocking admission after their 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday, which left them 13th in the Premier League.

With six defeats in 12 in M16, this is the club’s worst start to a home season in 131 years and Amorim did not hide from an “unacceptable” start.

But pundit Michael Dawson, who captained Tottenham, felt Amorim was playing a risky game by being so direct in public.

“I’m not sure I would be very happy if my manager came out and said I was part of the worst Manchester United team ever,” he told Sky Sports.

‘I understand what you’re trying to do, but this is getting embarrassing.

“If you’re part of that dressing room and we talk about confidence with Spurs, and I saw them (United) against Southampton in midweek, when Amad (Diallo) gets a hat-trick, it was to paper over the cracks.

‘They won 3-1, no problem, and you move on to the next one.

“We haven’t seen today’s game but it looks like it was another damaging defeat and this is worrying because Ruben Amorim knew he had a big job on his hands. I’m not really sure he knew it was that big.

Amorim’s United are averaging just one point per game, having managed 11 in the 11 Premier League games he has managed since replacing Erik ten Hag.

After five minutes they fell behind against Brighton after Yankuba Minteh’s goal, although they tied at half-time thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ equalizing penalty.

And they were unable to stem the tide in the second half as Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter scored to help Brighton double the season over their beleaguered opponents.

United’s worst ever Premier League result came last season under Ten Hag, when they finished eighth. Under Sir Alex Ferguson, they never finished lower than third in the renowned top flight.

“We are perhaps the worst team in Manchester United’s history,” Amorim admitted.

The dismal afternoon marked Manchester United's tenth Premier League defeat of the season.

‘I say this because we have to recognize it and change it. Here you go: your headlines.

“It is unacceptable to lose so many games for any Premier League club, so imagine Manchester United?

‘The rivals are better than us in many details. I am only here to help my players, but we must understand that we are breaking all the bad records.

“In 10 Premier League games we won two. I know that. Imagine what this is like for a United fan. Imagine what this is for me. We get a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that.

“I knew it was going to be difficult to come up with a completely new idea right now, but when you lose games it becomes really difficult,” he added. ‘That’s why I tell you that we are going to suffer because I will continue doing the same thing. I’m not going to change, no matter what.’

Amorim also criticized his players for losing discipline and form towards the end of the match.

‘Everyone was changing positions and that’s something I won’t see again. “We can lose but we have to maintain our position,” he said.

“We try to have possession and control the ball, but the players are anxious. This is not acceptable.

‘I know we can be successful, but we have to survive this moment. I’m not naive. We need to survive now.”
