Ruben Amorim has dropped a big hint as to whether Man United will pursue Viktor Gyokeres after the striker produced another impressive performance for Sporting Lisbon.
The Swede continued his impressive form with Amorim as the Sporting head coach oversaw Man City 4-1 in their final home game before his move to Man United.
Phil Foden had given Manchester City the lead in the fourth minute, before Gyokeres responded with three goals (two from penalties) to help inspire Sporting’s surprise victory.
There has been much discussion surrounding the former Brighton and Coventry striker amid his excellent goalscoring form and some have suggested that Amorim could try to bring him to Old Trafford.
Now, the Portuguese coach has broken his silence on the matter and revealed when he expects Gyokeres to leave Sporting.
Viktor Gyokeres continued his good scoring streak in Sporting’s 4-1 victory over Man City
Ruben Amorim then hinted at the Swedish international’s future at the club.
Speaking after the game, according to One BallAmorim said: ‘If I start joking about this Gyokeres situation, I’ll get in trouble.
‘This is my city, this is my country, so I will respect it. “Viktor has to stay until the end of the season and then his life will probably go somewhere else.”
Although a January move for the Sweden international appears to be ruled out, Amorim appeared to hint that he could launch a summer move for Gyokeres.
Earlier in the evening, United legend Rio Ferdinand advised Gyokeres to follow Amorim to United after his impressive hat-trick against local rivals the Red Devils.
“Recruitment teams at all the Premier League clubs must be scratching their heads at how they let him get away,” Ferdinand said.
‘He has not followed a conventional route, his path to the top has not been easy.
“He was at Brighton as a kid, he was sold to Coventry, he was loaned to Swansea, he came back to Coventry and did well, then he went to Sporting Lisbon.
Gyokeres’ overall balance at Sporting amounts to 63 goals in 66 games
Meanwhile, United forwards Rasmus Hojlund (left) and Joshua Zirkzee (right) have struggled.
‘He has had a journey in which he has had to build himself and create what he is now.
“You think ‘How has he been allowed out?’, suddenly when you see what he has, maybe he has grown into what he is, the confidence, the height that he has, the physique that he could have had. wait for it. that comes.
“Sometimes today he moved away from the players, keeping people at bay.”
The hat-trick took Gyokeres’ tally this season to 23 goals in 17 games this season, with his total tally for Sporting now standing at 63 in 66 games.
