A transatlantic love story, tensions with an older brother, a party past and the grief of losing a parent. No, these are the memoirs of Prince Harry Spare, but the plot of the new bonkbuster Red White & Royal Blue.
The Amazon film, which was released this weekend, is based on the best-selling novel by Casey McQuiston, which sees the son of US President Alex Claremont-Diaz, played by Taylor Zakhar Perez, fall in love with Britain’s Prince Henry, interpreted by Nicolas Galitzine.
But many have noted the similarities between the fictional Prince Henry and the real-life one (Prince Harry’s full name is Henry Charles Albert David).
Like Prince Harry, Prince Henry falls in love with an American – although it is a man, not a woman.
But that’s not where their similarities end. Henry also mourns his father throughout the film, Harry has openly spoken of the grief of losing his mother.
Calling himself a ‘spare’, Prince Henry also faces tension with his older brother and heir to the throne – named Prince Philip – as he also enjoys a sweet relationship with his red-haired sister, who, without perhaps attempting to veil her inspiration, is called Princess Beatrice.
The film’s director, Matthew Lopez, said Tatler that he borrows things from “William and Harry” for the character, while the actor playing Henry says he’s ‘more than one William’.
Here, FEMAIL examines the striking similarities between Prince Henry and Harry, from their names to a love of polo…
Designates itself as the spare part
In red, white and royal blue, Prince Henry frequently refers to himself as ‘the Spare’

Prince Harry called his memoir “Spare”. The 416-page book revealed dozens of scandalous stories, including his frozen penis and an allusion to having sex with Meghan at Soho House.

He is the second son of Princess Catherine and Arthur Fox. Princess Catherine (who is only mentioned by name in the film as she is off-screen in Botswana) is the first to ascend the throne, while her son Prince Philip is the heir.

The prince, who stepped down as a senior royal and moved to California with Meghan in a quest for greater privacy, remembers in excruciating detail dozens of family arguments and intimate conversations. He reveals his father’s health issues and the fact that the king still carries his favorite teddy bear.
The love of polo

Prince Harry and Prince Henry are both enjoying a game of polo.

He threw himself into the game which ended in a 7-7 draw in the Sentebale ISPS Handa Polo Cup.
Back home in California, he also often plays polo and regularly attends the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club for his Los Padres team.
The club is run by his old friend Nacho Figueres, an Argentine sports star dubbed the “David Beckham of polo” by Tatler.
Strained relationship with family

In the film, his brother (named Prince Philip) is cold towards him while his red-haired sister, Princess Beatrice, is the one he confides in, telling her he’s “as gay as a maypole”. (pictured together)

Prince Harry may have fallen out with Prince William and King Charles, but remains the “best friend” of his cousins Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, according to a source. Harry and Meghan are pictured with Eugenie

Prince William (pictured with Harry in July 2021) is ‘most overwhelmed’ by his brother’s memoir, while King Charles ‘would like Prince Harry back in the family’, according to a source close to the Royal House
While Prince Harry is notoriously tense with his brother, Prince Henry also has a frosty relationship.
Harry called William a “sworn enemy” and publicly called on his family to apologize to himself and Meghan for what they consider slights.

Although Prince Harry does not have a sister, he is famous for his red-haired cousins Beatrice and Eugenie.
In fact, a source close to the family recently claimed that Harry remains his cousins’ “best friend”.
“They are still best friends and talk constantly,” an insider said. People.
They added that the tensions between Harry, Meghan and the firm have been “really stressful” for Beatrice and Eugenie, and that they find it “difficult to watch” as they “see both sides”.
And while Harry has accused the Royal Family of racism, the King (played, ironically, by Stephen Fry) in Red, White & Royal Blue is openly homophobic
Romance with an American (and choose it rather than have to)

Perhaps the most obvious parallel between Harry and Henry is their love for an American, although the fictional Prince Henry falls in love with a man, while Harry fell in love with a woman.

Prince Harry broke with tradition by choosing to marry American actress Meghan Markle in 2018, as the film’s central theme is Henry’s love for America’s “first son”.

Harry and Meghan stepped back as senior royals in January 2020, while the end of Red, White and Royal Blue sees the king warning Henry not to come out.
That doesn’t stop her though, with the film ending with the couple walking hand-in-hand on a balcony.
Love of the party and rebellious tendency

In both the book and the film, Prince Henry likes to party. Just like the real Prince Harry, who was known for his rebellious streak and navigating ways in his youth.

He racked up a bill of over £30,000 during an infamous stay at a Las Vegas hotel, but never had to pay it.
As he often frequented Boujis and sadly made headlines when he landed in the gutter in 2007, back when it was common to find the royal stumbling in the street after a night of drinking shots of Crack Baby – the club mix of vodka, passion fruit puree, Chambord and champagne.
In his memoir, the Duke of Sussex sensationally admitted to taking cocaine “a few times” during his wildest party years.
And he also confessed to having also confessed to taking cannabis and magic mushrooms, and ended up hallucinating that a trash can was talking to him.
In his book, Harry describes smoking cigarettes and cannabis and drinking at Windsor Castle golf course while a student at Eton.
Grief of losing a parent
Much of the film also deals with Prince Henry mourning his relative.
Prince Harry has openly discussed losing his mother, Princess Diana, at a young age.
In Spare he revealed he was looking for a woman who ‘claimed to have powers’ to try to speak with Diana, who was killed in a Paris car crash in 1997 as her youngest son was about to to be 13 years old.
He also claimed to have received a message from the late Princess of Wales, in which Harry was apparently told he was “living the life she couldn’t”.
