Ronda Rousey is ‘a JOKE in the MMA world’ and ruined her legacy with WWE, claims Julianna Pena

Ronda Rousey is ‘kind of a JOKE in the MMA world’ and has ruined her legacy by becoming a ‘sold out’ in WWE rather than recovering her reputation from two infamous knockouts, claims UFC champion Julianna Pena

  • Ronda Rousey had a transformative effect on the world of women’s MMA
  • She was a pioneer, but her legacy was partially tarnished by her last two battles
  • Rousey was knocked out badly by both Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes
  • Julianna Pena says ‘deep down’ Rousey will suffer from the way it ended

According to Julianna Pena, Ronda Rousey has become a “joke” in MMA circles after being “sold out” to WWE following her shameful exit from the competitive sport.

Pena, the UFC’s bantamweight champion, took aim at the 35-year-old female martial arts pioneer for what she deemed a failure to “get back on the horse.”

Rousey made time for her MMA career after being brutally knocked out by Holly Holm with a head kick and then stopped in one round by Amanda Nunes.

It was a brutal end to one of the most exciting careers and Rousey was excited on his way to the top, performing her signature armbar seemingly at will.

Now the queen of the bantamweight division, Pena has one of the biggest setbacks ever caused by beating Nunes.

And she wants Rousey to come back, though she admits it’s unlikely to happen.

The 32-year-old said: ‘Ronda is so old news, isn’t it? I think the incredible thing about her is that she opened the door and destroyed people in 10 seconds, and became a star for wrecking people on the first round, and that’s great – but she got knocked out twice and never came more back . So how legit is she?

“She had to go to pro wrestling. And I get that and I love that. But as a fighter and someone who is competitive, I know that – deep down – it probably really bothers her, the fact that she suffered two knockout defeats and never came back to make up for her name.

“If it really bothers her and if it gets under her skin at the end of the day to know that, you know, her legacy is kind of ruined by the fact that she never came back and never got on the horse again, then I would like to invite her to please come back – and if she would come back I would welcome her with open arms.’

She continued: ‘That’s what I’m saying, she’s a bit of a joke in the MMA world right now because she’s a – what’s the word? – out of stock.

“Like, a little sold out there. I mean, I think I understand, right? It’s like pro wrestling is fake, you get paid millions of dollars, I get it.

“But for me, for real s***, for like the ‘you’re the real, real deal’, I’d say that’s in the UFC. And if she ever wants that real smoke, I’m ready.”

Pena defeated Nunes last December and both women are the coaches in the upcoming series of The Ultimate Fighter.

It will be fascinating to see how their rematch turns out, especially now that Nunes looked so bizarre at their first meeting.

Their fight is expected to take place in July or August, but a date has not yet been confirmed.
