Romelu Lukaku ‘personally arranged his return to Inter Milan by calling manager Simone Inzaghi on his birthday and asking to come back to the San Siro’.
The £98million Belgian striker is on the cusp of re-signing for his former club Inter on loan after just one disappointing season at Chelsea.
The two clubs are close to an agreement after Inter increased their initial loan from £6million to £8.5million with additions.

And in Italy, Lukaku has been shown to lead the way in pushing the comeback, even bypassing his agent Federico Pastorello, by answering the phone with Inzaghi more than two months ago.
Corriere dello Sport says the call was made at 8:30am on April 5 and after wishing the coach a happy 46th birthday, Lukaku reportedly asked: ‘Sir, what can I do to get back to Inter?’
The conversation came the day before Chelsea played their crystal clear quarter-final of the Champions League, the first leg against Real Madrid.
Lukaku helped Inter win the Scudetto during two successful seasons there before returning to Chelsea last year
They lost the game 3-1, with Karim Benzema scoring a stunning hat-trick, and Lukaku lost one of Chelsea’s best chances of the evening when he headed wide from a good place.
Indeed, with Milan clearly in mind, Lukaku failed to score in all of April and more than a month after calling Inzaghi.
Chelsea fans reacted furiously to the revelation on social media, calling Lukaku a “snake.”
One wrote “shocking professionalism,” while another said, “Just get him out. Eliminating his bad vibes will improve the team’s performance.”
It would have been a nice birthday present for Inzaghi, as Lukaku was the man who convinced him to leave Lazio last year and accept Inter’s offer to replace Antonio Conte.
But Lukaku’s departure to Stamford Bridge in July 2021 caused Inzaghi’s relationship with Inter to falter.
Now, however, all will be forgiven as Lukaku is poised to return to the club he helped in their first Scudetto in 11 years by scoring 24 league goals in the 2020-21 season.
‘Big Rom’ desperately wanted to go home and chose Inter again to be loved and pampered again by a coach other than Thomas Tuchel.

Lukaku struggled to find his top form at Chelsea after the club record returned there last August, with just eight Premier League goals and 15 overall in 44 games.
He caused controversy in December when, in an interview with Sky Italia, he admitted “not being happy” with his situation at Chelsea and criticized Tuchel’s tactics.
In the same interview, he expressed a desire to return to Inter “in the near future”, a wish that is now likely to come true.

Thought Lukaku later apologized for the comments, he was fined and the interview overshadowed his and Chelsea’s season.
New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly was convinced Lukaku’s departure was best for all parties after the Belgian made clear how determined he was to leave.
With Lukaku’s departure, Thomas Tuchel has yet to find a target threat and Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling is at the forefront of the plans.

Chelsea have not yet contacted City, but with a year left on his contract, they believe Sterling, 27, would be worth around £55million.
City are prepared for Sterling’s departure and will not stand in his way, but sports post understands that he is still considering his options.
Chelsea are also fond of Robert Lewandowski, but his desire to move to Barcelona makes a deal unlikely. Red Bull Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku and Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele are also options.
