Roma head coach Paulo Fonseca would like to sign the borrowed duo Chris Smalling and Henrikh Mkhitaryan for permanent deals in the summer.
The Premier League pair joined the Serie A club last summer, with Manchester United defender Smalling especially impressing with 26 games in all competitions, including two goals.
Arsenal attacker Mkhitaryan was out of favor with previous Gunners boss Unai Emery and it is unknown if he could appear in the plans of Mikel Arteta next season – but Fonseca wants to stay both in the Italian capital.

“Chris is a great, great man, a great, great professional,” said the Roma boss Sky Sports.
“I want Chris to stay. We speak. I don’t know if it’s possible because of the situation with Manchester United, but I’d really like Chris to stay here with us because he’s very important.
“He is a great player, a great man with a great attitude every day and for all these reasons I would be very happy if Chris stays.”
Moreover, the Portuguese manager praised the impact of Mkhitaryan on the club. The Armenian scored five goals in 18 games in all competitions, and scored and provided an assist in the 4-0 win over Lecce on Sunday.
“Mkhi suffered some injuries during this season, but he is now returning and proving his quality,” Fonseca revealed.

The striking performance of Smalling has caught the attention of English manager Gareth Southgate, who traveled to Italy to see the 30-year-old in action.
The United set out his desire last week to play for his country again, possibly returning for this summer’s European championships.
