Extinction Rebellion founder Roger Hallam is in hospital after revealing he had ‘crushed’ his leg in a cycling accident.
The controversial environmentalist, who also helped form eco-mobs Insulate Britain and Just Stop Oil, shared a photo of himself in a hospital bed with his thumbs up ahead of Extinction Rebellion’s massive protest in London last weekend that ‘The Big One ‘ was named.
Mr Hallam, 56, was pictured wearing an external fixator on his right leg which is used to hold broken bones in place with metal pins or screws.
In an update last Friday – on the first day of ‘The Big One’ – Mr Hallam wrote: ‘I am writing this from a hospital bed. See the picture. I fell off my bike and shattered my leg bone.”
Extinction Rebellion, Insulate Britain and Just Stop Oil joined forces with several other campaign groups in an effort to mobilize around 50,000 eco-enthusiasts in London from April 21-24.

Eco zealots flocked to London over the weekend before Just Stop Oil held ‘slow’ marches this week
Meanwhile, Just Stop Oil organized further protests yesterday through ‘slow’ marches through the capital.
More than 100 members began marching this morning around 7:30 am from five different locations to keep their momentum going.
It was the ecogroup’s second day of demonstrations, after provoking anger from motorists on Monday when they also walked slowly on roads and held banners.
Among the protesters yesterday was attorney Kate Logan, who said she believes “time is running out” to stop climate change.
The 38-year-old said: ‘Ordinary people know this, but our government continues to license new fossil fuels. They’re writing a death sentence for millions. I have signed petitions and campaigned for change through the “usual” methods for years, but to no avail, civil resistance is now our only option.’
Writing from hospital, Mr Hallam – who ironically owns a farm described as ‘poorly insulated’ in an official energy performance certificate – encouraged supporters to take part in further demonstrations, adding: ‘Don’t forget to JSO to do slow marches when you’re in the UK.
“But most of all remember that we will have the greatest life experiences imaginable in the next decade and we must all stick together and persevere. And be happy about it.
Lots of love from the hospital! x (courtesy of the NHS)’.
Mr Hallam has previously come under scrutiny for comparing the Nazi killing of six million Jewish people to other historic massacres, while also claiming that the memory of the Holocaust held Germany back.

The former organic farmer was quickly condemned by Extinction Rebellion groups in Germany after his comments to a newspaper in the country.
In July 2020, XR announced that Mr. Hallam no longer has a formal role in the organization and has moved to Just Stop Oil.
The leader of Just Stop Oil was recently released from Wandsworth Prison after being charged with plotting to cause mayhem on the M25 in November.
On February 28, he tweeted: ‘4 months in a UK prison for giving a speech – I’m finally free. I ask for the charges to be dismissed. Last week my second jury trial found me not guilty. That’s me 2, carbon state 0. I hope they don’t want to make 3-0. Would be embarrassing.’ He added on Facebook that he was “crazy as hell” about his imprisonment.
A month before his release, the former XR spokeswoman compared the group to a “cult” – claiming that protesters were told on television to cry and take their children to demonstrations as part of a “masterclass on manipulating emotions” .
Zion Lights wrote that Mr. Hallam “called himself a prophet” and liked to claim that war and murder are just around the corner as part of an effort to inspire “terror and devotion” among followers.
Mr Hallam – and three others – were also recently cleared of conspiracy to damage property after taking part in a protest that saw pink paint thrown over several charity buildings.
