Virtual gaming platform Roblox is developing game content ratings and more user-friendly parental controls, said Remy Malan, the company’s chief privacy officer. The Wall Street Journal
Half of Roblox’s audience of more than 30 million daily users are children under the age of 13, but the platform has struggled to include sexually explicit content at times. According to the WSJ
The current system of the platform limits children to specific games, but under the new system, parents would have more information about what children can find in a particular game; until you play a game, it is not always clear that it contains explicit or inappropriate content.
Malan didn’t specify when the new rating system would be available, but said Roblox has a team of over 2,300 people monitoring games for safety, using a mix of human moderators and AI.
Launched in 2006, Roblox is a runaway hit during the pandemic, giving children at a social distance a social space to gather online. The company reported revenue of $ 588.7 million in the first nine months of 2020, up 68 percent from the same period in 2019. Roblox went public via direct listing in March, and said in his prospectus that its users spent an average of 2.6 hours per day on the platform over the past year.
