Robin Goodfellow’s racing tips: best bets for Saturday, April 3

Nate The Great (Musselburgh, nap, 3.35) may have a long way to go before he rivals Hall Of Famer’s illustrious performance of basketball Nate Thurmond, but victory in the Betway Queen’s Cup would be a start.

Carrying the nickname of one of the NBA’s greatest players would always be difficult for Nathaniel’s son, but the first signs were promising when he was narrowly defeated in the 2018 Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot after a tidy debut win over Carlisle.

There have been flashes of excellence since then, but a 17-race career has yielded just three wins, perhaps underachieving for a horse that promised a lot as a juvenile.

The most recent of those victories was last booked at Wolverhampton in the hands of the promising apprentice William Carver, who showed his tactical acumen to steal a march on his eight rivals and achieve hard-won success.

That win was trainer Andrew Balding’s first, successful in the valuable stay event at Lingfield on Friday and the Kingsclere handler has been tasked with returning the gelding to former glory following a switch from Archie Watson last summer six times ago.

The pairing with Carver could be the catalyst for Nate The Great’s renaissance as his two starts aboard the squad have resulted in a narrow defeat to the talented Australis and February’s hard-won success at Dunstall Park.

Hopefully the pair can make the most of a handy low draw today and be proactive from the boxes, as the squad has already proven its effectiveness around Musselburgh’s tight corners, having won a new event there in September 2018.

Among the rivals of the squad, Alright Sunshine could emerge as a living peril given his track record.

Undefeated in both starts at this afternoon’s venue, the six-year-old is starting to show some leniency from the handicapper and could be nicely positioned for a horse that likes to jump late.

He won’t be lacking in fitness either, as he’s been busy with hurdles lately.
