Robbie Williams is set to score his 15th number one album in the UK after the release of the soundtrack to his biopic Better Man.

The semi-biographical film follows the 50-year-old star’s meteoric rise to fame as a member of Take That and his subsequent dramatic fall, as he struggled with his personal demons and the challenges that success can bring.

But in a twist on the genre, the pop star is portrayed as a chimpanzee in the film, while everyone else is human, with Jonno Davies performing the movements using motion capture technology and Robbie doing most of the voice work. .

While it has been very popular with critics and peaked at number five at the UK box office, international audiences have not been convinced.

Upon its release, the film was considered a box office failure in the United States, grossing $1.1 million despite a budget of $110 million. However, the film performed better in the UK, but still not as well as expected.

It’s not all doom and gloom for Robbie though, as he heads for another UK number one album.

If successful, it will be Robbie’s 15th chart hit and will maintain his record as the male solo artist with the most number ones.

On Monday, the official Charts Company releases the chart update showing how sales and streams have been going over the weekend.

And as of Friday, Robbie’s official Better Man soundtrack sits at the top of Monday’s album chart update, ahead of Gracie Abrams and Sabrina Carpenter.

The film’s soundtrack includes updated versions of their hits Rock DJ, Angels, Let Me Entertain You and Better Man, as well as new versions of Take That, Relight My Fire and their new song Forbidden Road.

Despite the failure of Better Man in the US, Robbie has revealed that he is already working on releasing a sequel, which will begin around 2007 onwards.

Speaking to Australian DJ Sean Brown, Robbie said: “There are so many things that didn’t make it into the film, just because we couldn’t fit them in.”

‘(Not that) I was too ashamed or embarrassed to say it; there are many stories. It would have to have been a five-hour movie for everything to fit together.’

And he added optimistically: “And I hope it does well and there is a Better Man 2.”
