Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney joined the team’s wild League One promotion celebrations in Las Vegas, but duo Paul Mullin and James McClean could be in trouble after they made a controversial anti-monarchy statement.

The team enjoyed a luxurious vacation in Sin City, Nevada for the second consecutive season, hosted by Hollywood superstars Ryan Reynolds and McElhenney.

The Welsh team sealed their place in the third tier of English football for the first time in 19 years after finishing second, but missed out agonizingly outside the title.

Shortly after the third season of the hit documentary series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ hit streaming platforms, McElhenney and Reynolds again ensured their victorious players were treated like VIPs during their biggest party yet.

McElhenney himself took part in the festivities with the ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ creator posing alongside McClean and George Evans for a photo.

Not wasting much time after the end of the League Two regular season, Wrexham landed in Las Vegas on Thursday and made the most of the trip.

Shortly after landing, winger Ryan Barnett posted a photo at TAO Asian Bistro as McClean documented much of the first day on his Instagram Stories.

They then returned to the iconic Hakkasan nightclub, scene of last year’s drunken party following their historic promotion to the Football League. A montage of this season’s highlights was projected on the venue’s big screen.

American rapper Lil Jon performed on the night and the Wrexham players even had their own VIP area after receiving a heroes’ welcome.

However, Mullin and McClean are in the spotlight after taking a divisive photo. The former posted the snapshot on Instagram with the caption: ‘We hate the fucking King!’

The comment appeared to have been a reference to McClean’s distaste for the monarchy. The 35-year-old, who was offered a new contract by the club, openly admitted to singing anti-monarchy chants after winning promotion last month.

A video emerged of McClean being serenaded by his followers with a song that includes the phrase “hates the fucking King,” referencing his Republican stance. McClean himself joined in and seemed to warm up the crowd.

It came just weeks after Prince William visited Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground to meet staff and players and hear about the club’s astonishing rise in the EFL. King Charles also met Reynolds and McElhenney during his own visit in December 2022.

And he added: ‘Do I apologize for doing it? Absolutely not.’

McClean also shared the recent photo with Mullin and said: “We serve no king or kaiser except Ireland.” Sue me!’ Both photographs are believed to have been deleted.

In his autobiography, ‘My Wrexham Story’, Mullin complained about how the King’s visit to the club had disrupted preparations before a big match.

He later wrote: “Let me be clear: this visit could have been billed as a historic day for Wrexham, but it wasn’t for me. “I have no interest in royalty.

‘I don’t see why anyone should have the God-given right to be born with so much wealth and then have us pay for it too. It all comes down to a question of basic justice.’

Wrexham declined to comment when contacted by sport mail.
