Rob Lowe reveals he would play Kevin Bacon in Footloose – but lost the job after a terrible injury during the dance audition
Rob Lowe narrowly missed the lead role in one of Hollywood’s most iconic ’80s movies, Footloose.
The 56-year-old actor lined up to star Ren McCormack, but was ruled out after a horrifying injury during the dance audition.
The performance eventually went to Kevin Bacon, whose career skyrocketed due to the film’s success.

“I like to think Kevin Bacon owes me a lot in a small way because I auditioned for Footloose and went all the way to the dance auditions,” he said. The Kyle and Jackie O Show on Wednesday.
Despite not being a dancer, Rob explained that he had practiced the routine two weeks before the audition.
“I took it very seriously and I really wanted that part. I knew that movie was going to be huge, ”the father of two explained.

He added, “There were 25 of us at the audition, and the dance audition ended with a big running jump on your knees sliding across the floor – and I blew out my ACL.”
The ACL is a ligament in the knee joint that is usually torn during activities involving sudden movements or changes in direction.
“I left the Footloose dance audition in an ambulance,” said Rob.

Producers told him not to worry that the blunder would hurt his chances, as they had already decided to hire a dancer instead of an actor.
But Rob soon discovered that this was not the case after fellow thespian Kevin got the part.
“Forty-eight hours later, high on morphine, I read that Kevin Bacon got the part,” he grumbled.
Although Rob missed Footloose, he still managed to forge a successful career in Hollywood by staring at such popular films as The Outsiders (1983), St. Elmo’s Fire (1985) and About Last Night … (1986).
