Rob Brydon has revealed more about what happened during that notorious fishing trip ahead of the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special.

The actor, 59, plays the adorable Bryn West in the hit BBC show which returns for its finale on December 25.

And one of the last loose ends of stories to tie up is what happened to Bryn and Jason (Robert Wilfort) during their fishing trip years ago.

While the fishing trip has often been alluded to, fans never found out what happened that day between him and Bryn, only knowing that everything they did is “legal in Wales.”

Speaking on Jamie Laing’s Great Company podcast, Rob has joked: “I’m not going to tell you, but you wouldn’t really want to know, would you?”

‘Look, I’m someone who if my wife has bought me a gift, yes, let’s say at Christmas or a birthday, let’s say at Christmas and it’s under the tree.

‘There’s no part of me that wants to leave. I wonder this. No, no, no, I’m all for delayed gratification. Let’s wait. Let’s build. Let’s enjoy it. And even when I open it, I open it slowly.

‘I want this moment to last. I’m going to save the packaging. I take my time. And besides, even when I took the packaging off, I may not have looked at it yet. I could have done that and left, oh, because isn’t it just about enjoying life?

In the final trailer released last week, Gwen confronted her son and brother-in-law once and for all, demanding that they confess what happened.

In the clip she is seen telling a distraught Bryn and Jason: “30 years ago you two went on a fishing trip that almost tore this family apart.”

He will join Ruth Jones (Nessa) and James Corden (Smithy) in the long-awaited finale in which all the characters come together for the last time.

On the podcast, Rob also talked about what he thinks makes the show, which first aired in 2007, so popular.

He said of when they started filming: ‘I knew it was good. They knew he was really strong.

Well, it is enough to make a qualitative judgment. I mean, I always say the fact is, most things aren’t hits, right? Most television shows are not hits. Most movies are not hits. Most books aren’t hits, most records aren’t hits, right?

‘Most of them just come and go, and that’s fine. But then in this script, you say, being Welsh, I look at his representation of Wales and I say, oh yeah, yeah, that sounds familiar to me. These characters are great.

‘And all the characters are very well drawn. You know, everyone could stand their own show.

‘It’s beautifully written. I mean, what James and Ruth have done in that script. It’s as good as anything else, because it combines incredible character studies with a very, very tight plot.’

After 17 years, Gavin and Stacey will finally come to an end on Christmas Day, with one final episode to say goodbye to the beloved sitcom.

The upcoming special will mark the return of the BBC comedy for the first time in five years and fans are desperate to find out what writers James and Ruth have planned.

At the climax of the final Christmas 2019 episode, Nessa Jenkins got down on one knee to propose to Smithy, but viewers never got to hear her response.

And although viewers were left with a number of unanswered questions, the finale is sure to leave many loose ends.

Even though the producers and cast worked hard to keep key storylines from the finale a secret, there are several details that have been confirmed that fans can look forward to.

The BBC has released a synopsis of the upcoming special, teasing a reunion between the Shipmans and the Wests.

It reads: ‘The final episode of this much-loved comedy classic. It’s been five years since we left Nessa on her knees declaring her love for Smithy and asking him to marry her…

And in those five years a lot has happened. In Barry, Bryn is packing up the Picasso to prepare for a trip to Essex, Stacey and Gavin are looking for new ways to spice up their 17-year marriage, and Gwen is acting very strange.

‘Nessa has started a new business and Neil the Baby is about to start an apprenticeship with his father…

“In Billericay, Pam is stressed at the prospect of playing hostess, without the help of a recently retired Mick practicing his golf swings in the living room, and there have been more ups and downs in Pete and Dawn’s relationship.”

The huge cliffhanger from the 2019 special has kept viewers desperate for answers about Nessa and Smithy for years.

The couple had an on-off relationship during the series after several unplanned one-night stands led to their son, Neil the Baby.

In the latest episode, which caught up with the characters 10 years after the previous installment, it was revealed that they were successfully raising their son.

And as the family gathered in Barry for the festivities, Nessa got down on one knee to ask Smithy to marry her, with a special ending before we could hear her response.

Star and co-creator Ruth Jones has confirmed that the episode will pick up exactly where it left us, meaning we’ll finally know what happened next.

Nothing has been revealed so far, except for a brief clip in the trailer showing Smithy and Nessa sharing a flirty moment together while dancing alongside the other characters.

But the biggest hint that the couple will finally get their happily ever after are the snaps of the cast filming what appeared to be a wedding.

Many of the stars were seen boarding the famous Dave’s Coaches to head to the church for the big day, all dressed to the nines.

While the original series episodes were 30 minutes long, fans will be treated to an oversized 90-minute finale to say a proper goodbye.
