Rising star artist Anna Weyant opens up about falling out with dealer

A 27-year-old star painter dates her 71-year-old energy dealer after she got into a fight with a former cop who bought one of her paintings for $15,000, only to sell it a year later for $1.6 million.

Anna Weyant, 27, who first gained attention for her paintings on Instagramspoke out about her meteoric rise in a long profile for the Wall Street Journal on Saturday.

From selling her painting on the sidewalk for $400 just three years ago, Weyant has quickly become the toast of the art world, with several of her works fetching up to $1.6 million at auction, and their prices are expected to rise. rise even further.

Weyant also has the support of strong supporters. She’s been in a relationship with 71-year-old Gagosian for a year, and last month signed a worldwide representation agreement with famed dealer Gagosian Galleries after a bitter business split with Blum & Poe’s dealer Tim Blum.

“I’m just trying to protect her from the big bad wolves,” Gagosian told the Journal, insisting that he treat her the same as any other artist in his gallery when discussing Weyant’s career.

At the heart of Weyant’s split with her former dealer Blum appears to be her painting “Falling Woman,” which she says she sold for $15,000 last year — just half of what his gallery asked collectors for other works in her spring show in 2021 .

As interest in her paintings grew, Blum sent the painting to Sotheby’s for auction, and at the end of last month it fetched $1.6 million, a record for Weyant’s work.

Blum has not broken any rules, although dealers usually do not put their own artist’s paintings up for auction. It is unclear whether he was still representing Weyant when the artwork was sent to Tony’s auction house.

Although Weyant declined to detail her feud with Blum, she told the Journal that she was unhappy with how things ended and that “Falling Woman” shipment was the final straw in her decision to switch to Gagosian.

Blum declined to comment to the Journal and was not immediately available to DailyMail.com.

Born in 1995 in Calgary, Canada, Weyant studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, which she said she attended because it was the closest school to New York City to which she was admitted.

Far from an artistic upbringing, she is the daughter of a lawyer and a district judge. But she soon took up painting in college, even finishing in the top three in a Canadian art competition the summer after her senior year.

After graduating in 2017, she spent six months painting at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, where she says the city’s sepia tones influenced her now signature muted palette.

Weyant got her big break when she moved to New York in 2018 and started assisting established painter Cynthia Talmadge, who promoted her work on her. own Instagram account

Talmadge introduced Weyant to her own dealer Ellie Rines, owner of New York gallery 56 Henry, who told The Journal, “I saw a lot of potential in her.”

Rines helped Weyant make some of her first sales in the summer of 2019, putting her paintings on a sidewalk at a Hamptons art fair and selling a few for $400 each.

Group shows followed, and then Weyant’s first solo show in Henry 56, entitled “Welcome To The Dollhouse.”

Gagosian Galleries recently described the series as “a succession of dark cinematic vignettes portraying a doll’s house and the strange, secluded lives of its inhabitants.” The show sold out and each piece cost between $2,000 and $12,000.

It was around this time that Gagosian was first introduced to her work and bought one of Weyant’s paintings, entitled ‘Head’, which hangs in his house today.

In the spring of 2021, Weyant was exclusively represented by the Los Angeles gallery Blum & Poe, and some of her paintings were selling for nearly $50,000 each.

Gagosian, who attended her show in the spring of 2021, invited the performer to dinner at his Beverly Hills mansion, recalling being struck when she asked if he had gin, which is one of his favorite drinks.

The couple soon had a relationship and vacationed together in exotic places such as Paris and Saint-Tropez.

Despite her tension with Blum on the matter, it was the Sotheby’s sale of “Falling Woman” last month that caught the eye and put Weyant’s name on every collector’s lips.

First on the roll for the prestigious evening show, ‘Falling Woman’ exceeded all expectations, with the final bid coming in at eight times the high-end estimate.

Weyant’s relationship with Gagosian has also stirred up tongues in the art world.

Prior to dating Weyant, Gagosian and his longtime girlfriend, Chrissie Erpf, a senior director at the gallery, broke up in 2019, according to Page Six.

Gagosian also briefly dated Holly Bawden, his 35-year-old former personal assistant, later in 2019, the outlet reported.

Weyant’s allies reject any speculation that her romance with the legendary gallery owner has given her an edge in the unforgiving art world.

“When someone becomes successful, people kind of forget that that’s a human being,” Rines, the first Weyant dealer she stays close to, told the newspaper earlier. Daily Beast

“She’s a 27-year-old woman, and I think it’s really wild that men, mostly middle-aged men, are spreading all these rumors about her. I think it’s so pathetic.’
