Rio Ferdinand expects Manchester United to cut their centre-half roster this summer, which could put captain Harry Maguire or last summer’s star signing Raphael Varane on the chopping block.
After a club record 57 goals last season, the Red Devils are keen to sign a few defensive reinforcements to plug the gap ahead of Erik ten Hag’s debut season in Manchester.
Top transfer target Jurrien Timber, who developed a fruitful relationship with Ten Hag during his time at Ajax, is strongly associated with a summer move to Old Trafford.

His arrival could spell the end for ‘one or two’ of Maguire, Varane, Victor Lindelof or Eric Bailly, according to former Manchester United legend Ferdinand.
“I am curious what Ten Hag is doing in that area,” says the 43-year-old Atmosphere with Five.
‘We are talking about the young lad Timber at Ajax, a small central defender.

The defensive quartet cost the club a total of £182 million, but Manchester United have yet to find a consistent defensive combination in the middle half.
Due to hamstring tears and muscle problems, Varane only started 20 times in the Premier League last season, while Maguire only started 28 despite the captaincy.
Bailly, who has played an average of eight games a year for the past four seasons, is likely to leave the club this summer.
