- But with the club cash-limited, Erik ten Hag may have to sell to raise cash
- Ferdinand thinks Scott McTominay must have ‘tough talks with the club’
Rio Ferdinand has listed the four players Erik ten Hag is set to sell this summer to help Man United raise capital to compete in the transfer window.
With the club currently in full takeover, the Dutchman recently admitted he was ‘in the dark’ as to how much he could spend, with Harry Kane and, in what would be a rather sensational move, Neymar being bound to join the club.
But with the 53-year-old admitting he needs to strengthen and sign high-quality players in order to rival Arsenal and Man City at the top of the table, Ten Hag may have to look to raise those funds himself, selling several players.
And Ferdinand gave his opinion on who should leave the club, saying Scott McTominay, who has made 10 starts in 24 league appearances this season, will have to have “difficult conversations with the club about his future” and a lack of time to game.
“Scott McTominay hasn’t played a lot of football, not as much as he would like,” Ferdinand told the Vibe with five Youtube channel.

Erik ten Hag will likely have to sell players to raise capital as part of the club’s ongoing takeover

Scott McTominay (pictured) is the one Ferdinand thinks should move on this summer after the midfielder struggled to get playing time recently
“If I was him as a young player, I would probably start to assess this situation and have real difficult conversations with the club. [asking] do you see me as part of it or not.
“If I’m that far down the pecking order I’d start looking and I don’t think he’ll have any problem finding a club, he’s a very good footballer and he can add a lot of value.”
The former United centre-back then admitted that Harry Maguire, who joined the club for a historic fee in 2019 for £80million from Leicester, should also move on.
The 30-year-old, who has struggled for playing time this season, starting in just eight of the 16 Premier League games he has played, will become a free agent in 2025 after signing a six-year deal when he joined the club.
Ferdinand also suggested Anthony Elanga should also look elsewhere as the 21-year-old hasn’t made an appearance since early March.
“Harry Maguire has to consider a new option for himself. Unless he says he’s happy to be third or fourth choice. Elanga maybe [is another]he has no chance,” Ferdinand said.
He also suggested Anthony Martial be sold as his injury problems were a problem for United.

Mail Sport today revealed that David de Gea (left) has ‘agreed’ a new contract with the club
“Martial has proven that he cannot stay in shape. I think if you get rid of those four, there’s £100m sitting there. Elanga is not getting the football he deserves.
“He did well when he arrived and still has no luck. Great players ahead of him but he wants to play first-team football.
Meanwhile, Mail Sport reported earlier today that David de Gea had ‘agreed’ a new deal with the club after speculation grew over his future following an inconsistent season which saw him receive criticism for its distribution.
Dean Henderson is also expected to leave for Norwich this summer, which could once again add to Ten Hag’s transfer cash reserves.
