The freestyle wrestlers Horst Lehr (Köllerbach) and Kevin Henkel (Littenweiler) can still hope for bronze after their quarter-final defeats at the European Championships in Zagreb.
Both go on the mat on Tuesday (from 11:30 a.m.) in the repechage round. On the other hand, Erik Thiele in the class up to 97 kg and Andre Clarke (65 kg) were eliminated.
Lehr (57 kg), third at the 2021 World Championships, lost the second fight to Aliabbas Rzazade from Azerbaijan after his opening win with a shoulder throw. Henkel (70 kg) failed at Haji Aliew (Azerbaijan). Since the two German opponents reached the final on Monday evening, Lehr and Henkel will continue.
For the German wrestlers, the European Championships in Croatia are a location determination on the way to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
“The European Championships in Zagreb are very important to us, because we are already approaching the World Championships, which will be held in Belgrade in September and at which the first tickets for the Olympic Games will be awarded,” said Ringer- President Jens-Peter Nettekoven.
