Not only will Rihanna serve as producer, songwriter and songwriter for Paramount’s still-untitled animated film The Smurfs, but she will also star as Smurfette when it hits theaters February 14, 2025.
Paramount announced the news at CinemaCon 2023, also sharing that this animated film will be directed by Chris Miller, co-directed by Matt Landon, and produced by Rihanna, Jay Brown, Tyrann “Tay-Tay” Smith, and Ryan Harris.
“On behalf of our studio and our creative partners at LAFIG, we are so excited to have found our Smurfette who is one of the most beloved stars in the world,” said Brian Robbins, President and CEO of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon, and Ramsey Naito, President of Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation. With Rihanna’s unique creative charisma and musical talents, there is a tremendous opportunity to raise the cultural bar for The Smurfs universe in a way like never before.”
Rihanna isn’t the first artist to play Smurfette, having been voiced by Katy Perry in 2011’s The Smurfs, and Demi Lovato in Smurfs: The Lost Village.
Rihanna is also no stranger to acting, having had roles in films such as Battleship, Home, Bates Motel, Ocean’s 8 and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
