Richard Matthews suffered severe brain injuries on April 10 following the attack about 100 yards from his home in Innisfail, Queensland.
A 17-year-old boy was charged with causing grievous bodily harm following the incident and at this stage the charges remain unchanged in light of the death of Mr Matthews.
Mr Matthews appeared to be showing signs of recovery but took a turn for the worse after his brother Bill unexpectedly died of a stroke earlier this month.
“It’s a pretty devastating time for our family,” Mr. Matthews’ cousin Kodi said Cairn’s mail.
“I believe the stress of Richie’s injury contributed to my father having a stroke. Dad traveled from Cairns to Innisfail every other day to see him.’
He added that the “random attack” had “torn his family apart.”
Mr Matthews was a huge rugby league fan and supported Manly.
