Rhinoplasty: all the questions to ask yourself before getting started
Both as an aesthetic or therapeutic treatment, rhinoplasty is not an operation to be taken lightly. Nose surgery indeed changes the morphology and appearance of the face. Hence the importance of asking the right questions before embarking on such a change. You can consider Dr William Mooney for rhinoplasty.
You have been thinking about Rhinoplasty for a while. Your nose, for your reasons, no longer looks the best, and surgery would be the solution to this problem.
But like any surgical intervention, it is important to step back, ask the right questions, and make sure that we have all the necessary information at our disposal to make the right choices.
Why do I want to do rhinoplasty?
Nose surgery can be considered for three reasons. The first is aesthetic. It aims to solve a complex often present for a long time. A slightly humped, prominent, too thin, too big nose… But rhinoplasty can also be functional if a patient has difficulty breathing. Finally, it can be restorative if the nose has been deflected or broken during a car accident, too violent contact, a fall etc.
If the functional and restorative surgeries leave few alternatives, the aesthetic operation must be considered from another angle: is the desire to change your nose rooted, necessary or is it a fleeting desire? A successful operation is necessarily the result of a long reflection. Do not hesitate to discuss it with your entourage, or with people who have used this type of operation. But in the end, it is your choice that comes first. You must do it for yourself, not for others. A psychological assessment may be offered before actually operating. It is a question of detecting if the desire is the fruit of a simple temporary feeling or if the anomaly will probably never be accepted.
Am I old enough for nose surgery?
A large majority of surgeons do not operate before 16 years of age. The growth is then complete, and the patient is old enough to make her own decisions.
How to choose my cosmetic surgeon?
It is impossible to leave the choice of the practitioner to chance. Before putting the aesthetics of your face in his hands, it is best to take some precautions to select your professional and, if possible, consult several before you decide.
You can also read the official list of specialized cosmetic surgeons provided by the Council of the College of Physicians. If you have a choice, select a practitioner near you for more convenient follow-up. Also, trust your instincts and the confidence you felt during your first date. You must be able to express doubts, desires, fears… to your surgeon.
Does it hurt?
The consequences of nose surgery are not to be overlooked. You should know that after the operation, certain pains are to be expected as well as respiratory discomfort. The eyelids are also swollen and bluish. It takes ten days for the bruising to subside. But taking painkillers makes the pain more than bearable if you are determined. You just need to breathe through your mouth for a few days!
What can be complications?
If the operation took place in good conditions under the watchful eye of a confirmed practitioner, complications are very few and rare. However, an infection may appear despite the routine administration of antibiotics. It is also possible to observe bleeding from the nose.
Are there alternatives to surgical rhinoplasty?
Yes, medical rhinoplasty. Proposed by aesthetic doctors, it consists in injecting hyaluronic acid at the level of the nose to correct a small bump or asymmetry, a slight hollow, or even imperfections of the tip. Count between 420 and 700 € depending on the doctor. The result takes from twelve to eighteen months.
RHINOPLASTY: WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW ABOUT NOSE SHAPE CORRECTION
Currently, rhinoplasty (surgery to correct the shape of the nose) is the most popular surgery in the plastic surgery industry. At the same time, this is one of the most complex and delicate procedures. Therefore, it requires a serious approach and extensive experience of the specialist operating.
The operation to correct the nose has two directions. Rhinoplasty is a correction of the shape of the nose from an aesthetic point of view. Rhino septoplasty is an operation in which, in addition to correcting the shape of the nose, procedures are performed to correct the function of the nose.
What is the complexity of the operation?
Our nose performs the function of breathing, moisturizing the air, purifying it and delivering it to the lungs. Therefore, a change in the shape of the nose must be made in such a way that in no case, violate its function. And this requires great professionalism of the doctor and thorough knowledge of anatomy. The difficulty lies in the fact that in a very small area (the nose zone) there is a whole complex of cartilage, different in structure, ways of attaching, and connections with the muscles. Cartilages have ligaments among themselves, are attached to the bone structure. Besides, you must also take into account the skin and mucous membrane. Due to the complex anatomical architecture of the nose, not all plastic surgeons perform rhinoplasty. If the plastic surgeon is also not an ENT doctor, then, as a rule, he must go a long way before starting nose surgery.
Indications for rhinoplasty:
functional – poor nasal breathing can lead to chronic pulmonary failure and disorders in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. In this case, rhino septoplasty is indicated;
- Post-traumatic defects of the nose;
- Aesthetic – the patient does not like the shape of his nose, and he wants to change it.
Sometimes medical and aesthetic indications coincide. Then an operation is performed to correct the shape of the nose and restore breathing function.
Who performs rhinoplasty?
Nose surgeons and plastic surgeons are involved in nose surgery. At the same time, ENT surgeons, as a rule, do not deal with the aesthetics of the nose, they perform operations to correct its function. Therefore, in some plastic surgery centers, two specialists work simultaneously on one nose. Each of them performs that part of the work in which he is more competent.
To date, there are two options for performing rhinoplasty: open and closed surgery. For the patient, they differ in the presence of an external scar (in the first case) and, accordingly, in its absence. Open rhinoplasty is the variant in which the columella of the nose (the skin part between the nostrils) intersects. With the closed version of rhinoplasty, dissection is performed inside the nostrils on one and the other side. Then this scar is not visible, and it is almost impossible to determine by the appearance that the patient had rhinoplasty. The operation option is selected depending on the complexity of the task. If there are big problems, is it a second operation, or operation after a nose injury, then the surgeon will need to perform more manipulations. In this case, open rhinoplasty is performed. Primary rhinoplasty is usually done by a closed method.
For the patient, the operation is not traumatic, easy to tolerate, does not require much preparation and long heavy rehabilitation. The operation lasts from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the tasks that are agreed upon before the operation. After rhinoplasty, a plate is laid on the nose with which the patient walks on average up to a week. After a week, there are no external signs of the operation, except for a new beautiful nose.
