Rey Mysterio back to the top as WWE US Champion
Earlier this year we saw Rey Mysterio relinquishing the WWE United States Championship to Samoa Joe after suffering a legitimate shoulder injury at Money in the Bank PPV in May this year. But now, Rey Mysterio is back to the top of the pyramid as WWE United States Champion.
Rey recently defeated AJ Styles to win the WWE United States Championship for himself. All this came when both Rey and Styles were not having a good time in the ring as far as victories were concerned. Both of them had suffered losses at the Survivor Series PPV. While Rey failed to defeat WWE Champion Brock Lesnar, AJ who was set for a non-title Triple Threat against WWE NXT North American Champion Roderick Strong and WWE Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura also lost.
After Rey Mysterio was forced to relinquish his title due to his injury, fans were speculating when he would get a rematch for the championship. Finally, he got his long-overdue shot at the WWE United States Championship after he won a Fatal 4-Way to earn a championship bout. And the end result was that Mysterio won the Championship which was rightfully his from AJ Styles and started his second reign as United States Champion.
What made Mysterio’s victory even more special and glorious was the condition in which he fought the fatal-4-way match. The match was scheduled within 24 hours from his match against Brock Lesnar at the Survivor Series. Brock Lesnar had transferred to Raw from SmackDown especially for taking revenge on Mysterio. And those who witnessed their match at the Survivor Series would testify that after the match with the ‘Beast Incarnate’, Mysterio could hardly walk. For
Rey fighting another match within 24 hours was a miracle that many thought to be completely out of the question.
But ‘The Super Duper Kid’ pulled off the impossible. Not only did he fight the fatal-4-way match and won it, but he also didn’t stop till he dethroned AJ Styles and won the United States Championship. A part of it can be attributed to Styles’ underestimation of Rey. He mocked Mysterio right upto the point he found himself thrown into the turnbuckle.
Mysterio has always been the one to capitalize on opportunities and he sure didn’t let this one go. The ‘Master of 619’ landed a perfect finisher knocking both Styles and the referee out. At this point, we saw an attempt of interference from The O.C. returned to clean house but were stopped by Randy Orton who took out Gallows & Anderson single-handedly.
While all this was happening Rey administered another 619 followed by a helpful RKO from The Viper. That was enough to keep The Phenomenal One down. Rey then sealed the deal with the fateful Frog Splash and won himself the WWE United States Championship for the second time.
The match which was originally supposed to be Styles defending against Humberto Carrillo turned into his nightmare. And Rey received much-needed help from Randy whom he had defeated along with Ricochet and Drew McIntyre at the Fatal-4-way. It was a classic turn of events with trademark Raw style and the outcome was beyond imagination. Rey Mysterio is now the WWE US Champion as he is rightfully supposed to be.
