Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly earned a higher salary than three current Manchester United first-team players while he was at the club as an ambassador.
On Tuesday morning it was reported that United’s minority owners Ineos had decided to terminate Ferguson’s multi-million pound contract as the club’s global ambassador and director.
Ferguson took over after stepping down as manager in 2013 following a brilliant 26-year reign in charge at Old Trafford.
He was reportedly paid £2.16 million a year to serve as the club’s global ambassador in a deal that lasted more than a decade.
His salary at the club is just under £40,000 a week, which is reportedly double the weekly wage of United’s rising star Kobbie Mainoo.

Ferguson reportedly earned twice what United’s star midfielder Kobbie Mainoo earns in a year.
The midfielder is the team’s lowest earner, earning just over £1 million a year, despite his excellent progress last season.
Mainoo’s current contract began in February 2023. Since then, he has become a mainstay in Erik ten Hag’s midfield, making 44 appearances for the club in all competitions since the start of last season.
Records also suggest that Ferguson also earned more than Amad Diallo and goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, while working as an ambassador.
Diallo, who has broken into the starting line-up this season, earns £29,000 a week, while Bayinder earns £35,000.
However, Ferguson’s salary is equivalent to 10.7 per cent of Bruno Fernandes’ annual earnings at United, which amount to a staggering £19.5m.
The United captain is the highest earner at £375,000, after signing a new three-year deal in August.

Ratcliffe and Ineos no longer willing to continue payments to Ferguson
Casemiro is no slouch, despite his difficulties, earning a hefty £350,000 a week, making a total of £18.2m a year.
Marcus Rashford and Mason Mount can also be considered high earners at the club with salaries of £300,000 and £250,000 respectively.
Overall, Ferguson’s salary while working as an ambassador at the club was just 0.3 per cent of the club’s annual income of £662 million.
However, The Athletic claim that Sir Jim Ratcliffe had told Ferguson that the club is no longer willing to continue payments while they look to cut costs.
It was claimed that the finalization of the deal had been dealt with amicably, with Ferguson remaining as a non-executive director and welcome to attend matches.
Antony earns more than £10m a year despite his struggles since arriving in Manchester in 2022.
Ineos has embarked on a deep financial review after acquiring a quarter of the club’s shares earlier this year. Mail Sport revealed that this led to them making around 250 redundancies.
However, players like Antony, who has contributed 17 goals in 86 appearances for United, earn £10.4 million a year.
