The Australian basketball player behind the recent viral dance performance has revealed that the controversial routine was inspired by the latest Deadpool movie starring Ryan Reynolds.

The Australian men’s netball team surprised spectators over the weekend with their pre-tournament dance performance on the opening day of the Fast5 series in Christchurch.

The national team, known as the Kelpies, brought the crowd to their feet before their first match with their dance routine to NSync’s Bye Bye Bye.

The controversial routine has since gone viral, garnering millions of views online and fans are divided over whether they like it or not.

The player who came up with the idea was shooter Dravyn Lee-Tauroa, and he says he was inspired by Deadpool.

‘That was my fault. So, we started with the cha-cha slide and I didn’t want to be involved in that,” Lee-Tauroa told Seven’s Sunrise.

‘I saw this dance on TikTok from the new Deadpool movie.

‘I was inspired by that and the boys solved it.

‘We always wanted to be in a boy band. Who doesn’t? And we have to act.’

His Australian teammate Liam Forcadilla explained that the moves took a while to perfect.

“Yes, it was quite difficult to learn the dance between our training matches, but in the end we managed it,” he said.

‘We loved it and the audience loved it too. There was a lot of noise in there.

Unlike regular netball, Fast5 has just five players on each team, six-minute quarters and two- and three-point shots.

Fast5 is a bit like netball’s Big Bash: the tournament features pyrotechnics, bright uniforms, loud music and choreographed team dances.

Lee-Tauroa said she would also like to see pregame dance routines in more sports.

“I think world netball does an exceptional job of promoting the Fast5 world series,” she said.

‘They call it sports entertainment, bringing that entertainment factor to sport. All the athletes ignore it and I think it shows how much fun netball can be. We’ve gone viral almost every year we’ve been here for all the fun dances we do.

“It would be great to see more things like this implemented across all different types of sports.”

However, the moves were not to everyone’s taste, with some detractors comparing them to Australian breakdancing sensation Rachel ‘Raygun’ Gunn.

Others, especially those who saw it live, loved the performance.

To top it all off, the Kelpies won the entire tournament beating New Zealand 32-30 on Sunday night.
