Nearly half of people in the north of England have never visited the United States, despite more than a third wanting to go, according to a new survey.
The survey, carried out by the Irish airline Air Lingusconcluded that 35 percent of people in the north of England would like to visit the United States.
New York City is the top destination for northerners looking to travel to the United States, and 53 percent say it is the place in the United States they would most like to visit.
In second place is Los Angeles (30 percent), followed by Las Vegas and Orlando, Florida (joint third, 29 percent) and Miami (fourth, 22 percent).
The top activities in the United States, according to respondents, are sightseeing (43 percent), visiting theme parks (33 percent), and exploring nature or national parks (26 percent).
When asked what they found most attractive about the United States, 37 percent said the food and 30 percent said the weather.
Meanwhile, 58 percent said the United States made them feel “excited,” while 38 percent said the country invoked a feeling of curiosity.
The research also found that friendly customer service is the most vital part of a long-haul flight for Northern customers, with 94 per cent of respondents rating it as their top priority on a transatlantic trip.

Food and drink are next on the list, with 67 percent considering them important on a transatlantic flight, followed by ample legroom (59 percent) and in-flight entertainment (51 percent).
Aer Lingus flies to New York, Barbados and Florida direct from Manchester Airport. The airline also flies to 19 US destinations from Dublin Airport.
Air Lingus carried out the research, which heard the views of 1,000 people in the north of England, as part of its “ambition to better understand its northern customers”.
