The most common nicknames expectant parents give their baby include “peanut”, “bean” and “berry”, a survey has revealed.
About 60 percent of expectant parents name their baby bumps, and 71 percent continue to use those nicknames after their child is born.
The most popular name assigned to the lumps was “peanut”, used by one in ten pregnant couples.
When it came to the name of her newborn son in 2013, pop superstar Adele decided to keep it a secret and instead referred to him by his nickname ‘Little Peanut’.
The survey of 1,000 expectant parents and those with children under five, conducted for Pregnacare by supplement firm Vitabiotics, found that nicknames are often inspired by the size of the bump.

When it came to the name of her newborn son in 2013, pop superstar Adele decided to keep it a secret and instead referred to him by his nickname ‘Little Peanut’.
Other common sources of inspiration include pet nicknames or nearest and dearest pets, family traditions, and favorite foods.
‘Nugget’, ‘berry’ and ‘bean’ appear in the top ten and the most popular picks during pregnancy include ‘Wiggler’, ‘Fidget’ and Squish,’ the researchers found.
‘Buddy’, Beansprout’, ‘Bubba’ and ‘Bumpy’ also feature in the top 25 along with ‘Toad’, ‘Shrimp’, ‘Mouse’ and ‘Mango’.
For seven in ten parents (71 percent) the nickname belly sticks and they continue to use it long after birth.
Nearly half (46 percent) created personalized items featuring their baby’s name.
And an overwhelming nine-in-ten (89 percent) said the nickname helped them bond with their baby before birth.
Of those who didn’t name their bump, 44 percent said they simply didn’t feel the need, while 18 percent were afraid of becoming too attached and wanted to wait for the baby to arrive safely.
Susanne Bisinotto, of Vitabiotics, said: ‘The journey of becoming a parent begins as soon as you hear the exciting news.
“While this may be a rollercoaster time, many parents have experienced the psychological benefits of initiating this special bond with their baby by giving their baby bump a nickname.”
