David de Gea has reportedly made a mammoth decision about his future in football, with consequences for his English fans.

The goalkeeper has been a free agent since leaving Manchester United after 12 years in July.

De Gea, 33, is eager to return to football and could arguably still get a big contract, with many goalkeepers playing into their 30s.

Mail Sport reported in December that Newcastle were interested in him due to Nick Pope’s long-term injury, but would demand a pay cut.

However, Sun reports that De Gea has decided to stay in his native Spain to wait for an offer from a LaLiga club, according to sources close to him.

That could mean linking up with his former club Atlético Madrid, but it would be a battle to dislodge Jan Oblak from the number one spot.

Thibaut Courtois is injured at Real Madrid and could also join them as emergency cover, claims The Sun.

As he is a free agent, De Gea is free to sign for any club he wants outside of the transfer window.

The free agent market is open until March 28.

It was revealed that De Gea rejected an offer from Nottingham Forest in the January transfer window before signing Mats Selz from Strasbourg for £5.5m.

De Gea earned £375,000 a week at Manchester United, a colossal sum that most clubs would not consider paying to any player, let alone a goalkeeper.

Money, however, does not seem to be the be all and end all for him.

He reportedly turned down an offer of £500,000 a week to join Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, rejecting the mega deal because he did not want to move there.

There was talk of a return to Manchester United at the end of the summer, but that did not materialise.
