A recent report found that job applicants who put ‘they/them’ pronouns on their resume are often overlooked in the employment process, as the pronouns are seen as less qualified and lead to fewer interviews.
The Business.com report resurfaced Wednesday after it was shared online and Twitter owner Elon Musk called it “interesting.”
Musk, who has a history of criticizing ‘woke’ culture and has opposed the use of ‘they/they’ pronouns, shed new light on the report.
The study was based on an unscientific mailing of blind resumes to job employers. The only difference in the résumés was the use of pronouns. Those with them/them (pronouns used by transgender or non-binary people) can be detrimental to the work process.
When employers were asked for their feedback on the study, “several hiring managers revealed blatant biases and even bigotry against non-binary job seekers,” according to the report.

Elon Musk, who has a history of criticizing ‘woke’ culture, responded to the report, calling it ‘interesting’ on Twitter.

The study included a gender ambiguous name, ‘Taylor Williams’.
The only difference between the test and control curricula was the presence of gender pronouns in the test version, according to the report.
The test resume included ‘they/they’ pronouns below the name in the header.’ The pronouns she/her and he/him were not evaluated.
The findings showed that the ghost resume that included pronouns received 8 percent less interest than the one without and fewer interview invitations and phone screening.

A 57-year-old prospective employer in the agricultural industry said that while the resume featured a person who “seems to be a decent fit for the part,” she was “not interested in the drama that a person who thinks is a ‘they/them’ ‘Bring with them.’
Another potential employer who happens to be a woman, 59, in the manufacturing industry said: ‘Take off the pronouns; I would trash the resume for that reason alone.
A 50-year-old hiring manager in the hotel and food service industry said he would advise applicants to drop the ‘they/they’ pronouns.
‘I think personal pronouns are pretty silly in a work situation. This is best reserved for social settings rather than a work setting.’
Pronouns are unpleasant and unnecessary. Get rid of the pronoun nonsense. You’re either a “he” or a “she,” said another potential employer, a 36-year-old man in a university industry, according to the report.
According to the report, more than 64 percent of the companies that received these résumés were equal-opportunity employers in mainly liberal places, something that made the results what they say is “concerning.”
Ryan McGonagill, director of industry research at Business.com and author of the report, said the statistics show how much progress is needed on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in the workplace.

“The law makes it clear that no employment decision (hiring, firing or otherwise) can be based on your gender identity,” McGonagill said in the report.
“It is incredibly disappointing and unethical that so many of the hiring managers in our study disqualify a candidate for being authentic.”
Musk, who tweeted “interesting” referencing the study, has a history of criticizing “woke” culture.
In October last year, Musk blamed American universities for turning his transgender daughter Vivian against him.
In an interview with the Financial Times, the world’s richest man blamed ‘neo-Marxists’ at elite schools and universities for the estrangement between him and his daughter.
He added: ‘It’s complete communism. . . and a general feeling that if you’re rich, you’re bad.’
Musk also blamed the “awake mind virus” for making Netflix “unwatchable” after it lost 200,000 subscribers and shares fell 25 percent in April last year.
Musk agreed that the ‘awake mind virus’ is the biggest threat to civilization. He accused Netflix of neglecting its audience and focusing on awakening issues.
