Republicans vented their outrage Thursday following the revelation that a Manhattan grand jury had indicted former President Donald Trump on charges related to the Stormy Daniels affair.
“When our justice system is weaponized as a political tool, it puts us all at risk,” Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel wrote on Twitter.
“This is a flagrant abuse of power from a DA focused on political revenge rather than keeping people safe,” McDaniel, who was installed by Trump and withstood a challenge for her position early this year, wrote on Twitter.
Her comment was a nod to Republicans-elect, who have stood by Trump throughout the Russia investigation and during two Senate impeachment trials.
House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio responded in a statement consisting of one word, “obscene.” He is one of several House committee chairmen who have already sought to investigate Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg for his investigation.
RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel called the indictment “a blatant abuse of power from a DA focused on political revenge.”
Republican lawmakers in Congress were already rallying to Trump’s side ahead of the impeachment, with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz calling the crux of the case “utter nonsense” in comments to DailyMail.com.
Sen. Tom Tellis (R-N.C.), who has worked with the Biden administration at times, said the indictment “failed the smell test.
“The Department of Justice has already looked at the facts and determined there is no case against President Trump… Congress has every right to investigate the conduct of Manhattan Da Alvin Bragg,” he told CNN. Huffington Post.
“It is baseless and absurd. It is political persecution and ironically the fact that this left-wing Democrat is going after him has already proven to be a huge political benefit to Donald Trump,” Cruz said Wednesday.

House Chief Justice Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) blasted the indictment as “outrageous”

Pro-Trump House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (RNY) was among the first elected officials to come out with a statement criticizing the indictment.

A Manhattan grand jury has voted to convict former President Donald Trump over payments to porn star Stormy Daniels.
It remains to be determined how the indictment will play out in the presidential primaries and in the Republicans’ battle for control of the House of Representatives in 2024. Trump has used reports he might be impeached as a powerful fundraising tool, and has expanded his lead. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in a new Fox News poll released Thursday.
Trump himself expects that to backfire on President Joe Biden, who took office while Michael Cohen, Trump’s former go-between, was serving part of his three-year sentence for campaign finance violations related to the $130,000 payment agreement with Daniels.
Trump called it a “witch-hunt to destroy the Make America Great Again” movement in a statement blasting other investigations and vowing to defeat Bragg.
“They have now done the unthinkable,” Trump said, describing the accusation as a political act by his enemies. “Never before in the history of our nation has this happened.”
“I believe this witch hunt will backfire on Joe Biden,” Trump said in his statement.
Speaking exclusively to DailyMail.com on Thursday, Eric Trump slammed the ruling as a “ruthless attack” and an example of “the decline of American law.”
His brother, Donald Trump Jr., compared the indictment to acts of cruel dictatorship. The former boss has denied Daniels’ allegations of a sexual relationship, and is expected to plead not guilty.
Let’s be clear guys. This is like a communist level s**t. These are the things that would make Mao Stalin Pol Pot.
“The unprecedented election interference from corrupt socialist Attorney General Alvin Bragg is a political witch hunt and a dark day for America,” said House Republican Convention Chair Elise Stefanik (RNY), another prominent Trump supporter. The far-right far-left will stop at nothing to persecute Joe Biden’s main political opponent ahead of the 2024 presidential election to suppress the will and voice of the American people.
She concluded with a call to mobilize — a sign that House Republicans, like Trump, plan to try to cash in on the charges against the party leader.
“Tens of millions of patriotic Americans never got excited to exercise their constitutional rights to peacefully organize and vote at the ballot box to save our great republic by electing President Donald J. Trump in 2024,” the Trump loyalist said.
Trump’s attorneys, Susan Nickellis and Joseph Takopina, said President Trump has been indicted. He did not commit any crime. We will vigorously fight this political prosecution in court.
Just before 7 p.m. on Thursday, Trump launched his first fundraising appeal based on the “darkest chapter in our history.”
“Please make a contribution — any amount really — to defend our movement from the never-ending witch hunt and win the White House in 2024 — for a 1,500% impact,” reads the email from the Make America Great Again PAC.
