A Republican luxury car salesman, looking to challenge Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, has suggested that descendants of white Civil War soldiers should be eligible for damages.
Bernie Moreno, 55, of Westlake – a Cleveland suburb – is hoping to elevate Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown, who has held his seat since 2007 in the November election.
As he continues to campaign through the Buckeye State, he stopped in Milford on Tuesday and told residents he believes descendants of Northerners who fought in the Civil War should get compensation.
The Colombian-born candidate said their descendants “stand on the shoulders of giants” like James Madison and George Washington, and “that this group of people took over the largest empire in history.”
They said no, we will not stand for this. And I won,” Moreno said at the Milford rally. This same group of people later, the whites, died to liberate the blacks. This has never happened in human history before, but it has happened here in America. This isn’t taught much in schools, is it?

They make it sound like America is a broken racist country. You name a country that did this: that which freed the slaves, died in order to do it. You know, they talk about compensation. Where are the compensation for people in the north who died saving black lives?
Recently, California has been discussing offering compensation to black citizens who are descendants of slaves and could receive up to $360,000. The debate has drawn criticism from both sides – from those eligible who claim the amount is too low to critics who say they shouldn’t be getting anything.
Moreno, who has already secured the endorsement of Donald Trump, is the second GOP candidate to jump into the race and will face Ohio Senator Matt Dolan for Brown’s seat.
A Moreno campaign spokesperson said:
Bernie was right when he said that political correctness is killing our country, and crocodile tears from the left expose the hypocrisy of the Democrats he was referring to in the clip.
“However, it is not surprising that the liberal media missed his point, because it has been complicit in the charade of identity politics for years.”
Brown’s position in 2024 is at risk as is Ohio — known as a swing state in the past and becoming increasingly red, Trump’s backing in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.

Trump endorsed Moreno earlier this month on Truth Social, saying he wouldn’t be ‘easy to beat’
Last year, J.D. Vance — who was Trump’s preferred candidate — was elected to the Senate.
On April 12, the former president took to Truth Social in support of the immigrant, writing: “Word is Bernie Moreno, the highest-respected businessman from the GREAT STATE of OHIO, and father-in-law of a wonderful young congressman, Max Miller. He is considering running for the Senate. It won’t be easy to beat him, especially against Brown, one of the worst in the Senate! ”
Moreno, who posted the post on his Twitter page, wrote: “Thank you, sir!”
Moreno has also already posted to pro-Trump campaign media, including where he claimed he was a “pro-Trump legal immigrant.”

The Colombia-born candidate has already released his pro-Trump campaign materials, claiming to be a “pro-Trump legal immigrant.” He immigrated to the United States when he was five years old
“Illegals come to get free gifts, free money from Biden, take your job, free passes to crime,” said the Colombian immigrant, who came to the United States when he was five years old. They are changing our nations, let’s stop them.
“Build the wall and make English our official language, let us defend our country.”
He posted a photo of himself and his wife with Trump at a 2021 event for his wife’s politician, Max Miller.
“It is no coincidence that President Donald J. Trump chose Ohio for his first caucus of 2021. We were honored to welcome him!” read post.
